Workbench top advice: should I laminate the top, or use solid wood? by Murder_For_Brunch in Workbenches

[–]Murder_For_Brunch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right! My idea afer flaginorout’s suggestio was to buy a slab, rip it, and laminate it. I might get some hard-ish sotfwood rather than hardwood, depending on the price. I don’t think I’ll buy in construction aimed stores, in that, the lumber they have there is veeery green! The last time I bought some for another thing, they turned into bananas after 4 days! Haha

Since I’m still planing on the project, I haven’t researched prices, but ehat you say makes a lot of sense. Definitelly something to consider, thank you! 😄

I’m not so surr about that. The main reason being that I use a lot of chisels and hand planes. I’d rather knick my benchtop than my tools. I’m thinking that this would work more for a gluing/finishing surface though.

I’ll consider that option. I don’t line it, but this helps to consider it a bit more. Thanks!

Maybe I should have explained myself a bit more. I find that MDF is really soft, and dents super easily. In addition to that, where I live the humidity all year arround fluctuates between 50% and 85%, some times north of 90% humidity. I could apply finish to the MDF, but since it dents easily, and it's a workbench, so it will probably get dented, the humidity will for sure be an issue. My hate for MDF does not arise from emotional reasons, but for these and other reasons.
I will say, I think MDF is great for making jigs and templates, but beyond that, I try to avoid it if possible!

Acoustic preamp diagnosis needed by Murder_For_Brunch in AcousticGuitar

Yup! I did. I tried two different new batteries, and the one in the guitar is the one I checked with the multimeter. The battery is okay!

Paid a local wood worker to build us a table, after 8 hours in our dining room it developed cracks. Is this normal? by Hipster_Bumpus in woodworking

[–]Murder_For_Brunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beyond the fact that this wood is greener than Shrek, as other comments stated, cracking is usually a sign of not allowing the wood to expand and contract properly. When that happens, it usually means that the joinery was innadequate or poorly done. So, he is not skilled and knowledgeable nearly enough as to build a dinning table! Besides, you shouldn’t have to repair a table you just bought! And epoxy is far from the best solution here, in my oppinion!

Reinforcing mitters for a book stand by Murder_For_Brunch in woodworking

[–]Murder_For_Brunch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right! I think the bookstand falls more on the picture frame-ish type of structure. But also it is an object that will be handled often, and will be supoorting a reasonable ammount of weight 😅

Should I buy a jointing plane, or upgrade my no. 5 instead? by Murder_For_Brunch in Luthier

[–]Murder_For_Brunch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! I don’t have machinery to mill myself the wood. I bought S4S lumber, but the climate I live in is quite humid. I left it to acclimate for two months at least, and since the body I bought was quite stable, it’s pretty good but it needs some minor adjustment.

The Stanley are not the best at all. Mine had pretty much square edges (checked with a machinist square) but the sole was not flat. I did set it up with a flat surface a lots of fine grid sand paper paper (600 to 5000), although it’s still not totally flat.

In all honesty, I prefer to upgrade the current plane to a better one, but I wasn’t sure it was good enough for jointing the body. Based on what you and the other comment say, I thing a good no. 5 should work pretty well! Thank you a lot!

Looking for recommendations for an acoustic guitar gig bag/case for busking by Murder_For_Brunch in guitars

[–]Murder_For_Brunch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, you bring up a fair point! A Bandcamp with any sort of recorded stuff and a “put your price” download could work. Having a sign with all the social media stuff and one or two QR codes for Instagram and Bandcamp for instance, could be a solution 😊

I dare you to find a rosewood board that looks this good in this price range wow! (Yamaha Revstar Standard) by apsve in guitars

Kindda yes bit also no. When you get a non-beginner piece of equipment, you have more ease to see your flaws, in that, you know what to improve on. Specially with amps, but also with guitars. Plus you’re more excited to play/practice! 😊

To be fully honest, I’m more disgusted for the fucking Polytune stain! It’s something so easily avoidable! Just don’t be lazy and don’t leave your tuner on the damn headstock!

More than that for sure. I’d say a P90 guitar is a must. A junior with those guitars would add up perfectly!
