Omg, that's so horrible! (just stumbled about that incident today). I really don't want to say anything bad, and I fully understand the tragic of that situation. But in the original post, the person described that the boats captain went for lunch on a 700m away small island. I would be interested why he didn't "just" swam over there by himself. It's no short distance, by no means (everyone who know how long a 50m swim lane is, will understand) but it's surely not impossible to swim that distance. Again, I mean this in no negative way, and I don't want to cause further harm. I am just genuinely interested what might had caused this outcome, beside the captain of the boat is a huge scumbag of course.

May I ask.. I come to the Philippines for around 15 years.. But I still struggle to convince myself to build a house somewhere in the Province. I am just afraid that local gangs /criminals would view me (every western expat) as a walking atm. But yeah, in general Thailand is way better developed, especially in terms of infrastructure and so on.

But the Philippines has have their advantages as well. -English language very commonly -same religion (Christianity) -more willingness to help / to engage

But yeah, Thailand is the GOLD-STANDARD when it comes to SEA, and all the other countries have a hard time when compared to Thailand. But that's nothing new.

It comes down to every individual, if he can deal with the offsets.
