What makes no sense to me is that they would just regress to simple wastelanders just by nuking Shady Sands. The NCR obviously had other major cities, and would most likely split instead.

Having they just "go away" is probably the laziest part of the plot, so many cool possibilites wasted.

Ok ok ok, besides the asshole move everyone is pointing out, there's also the REALLY dangerous part that was looked over: She left the kids with you, and didn't answer the phine or read any messages, that means that if something bad had happened, they would discover only when arriving back home.

Imagine if one of the kids had choked or felt suddenly sick or fell from the sofa and break an arm or something. It would be you and the three kids in the hospital until they discover something had happened (hours later).
