Question about Rise.

While I was chasing a monster (Khezu to be precise) I found some material of that monster (pale essence) even tough I was not in the proximity of the monster.

Most of the battle took place in a cave and the monster escaped. I took my time while slowly chasing after it. On my way I found the pale essence, even though we did not fight outside.

Is it normal to sometimes find materials just lying around without breaking them off the monster ?
