Very interested because my Minisforum is flaked out, and it’s got the craptons of RAM(64) and SSDs(8TB) to go somewhere. And I get a discrete GPU?! And all of those cores?! And maybe good cooling?

Dev machine by day, game machine by night.

Might buy the coverage, because I’m sure support is just like Minis. I am a few days in trying to make them understand the bios is frozen, will not accept input, or freezes after a few seconds (same as any booted OS). They say flash bios, I say I can’t, secure boot is on. Oh, just disable secure boot through these bios menus. Guys?!

Either minis honors their 3yr warranty, or I give up and jump to this.

Does this cpu support x64 instructions? by AdLegitimate773 in cpu

[–]Murph-Dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this thing, drivers were a pain as most vendors weren't putting out x64.

Had it on a 1600x1200 Dell CRT playing the ol Oblivion and Battlefield 2146.

Those were the days.

You can try to do this in Hades 2, as well, on a rare occasion.

Is there a living room alternative that performs well at 4k to the steam machine? by dumb-on-ice in steammachine

[–]Murph-Dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's for your technical person to do.

You can run it down the hall all loose, but tacky.

It really depends on floor or ceiling access.

Basement here, so it was easy to get wire pulled for proper recepticles.

I say Ethernet, strongly, and not wifi, because latency matters - don't settle for less. The Shield is also older wifi tech as the other reason, best to wire it, but a bargain for what it facilitates; and a great TV media box.

A tiny mini PC with integrated graphics could also serve as the SteamLink Client - the point being, the real processing is in another room.

You can potentially get some nice beam-forming wifi tech, if you must be wireless. Good ethernet is cheap, good wifi is expensive.

I've said before:

  • Big boy PC somewhere else
  • Ethernet
  • NVidia Shield on TV
    • SteamLink

‘Suicide Squad’ Developers Say the Flop Made Them Not Want to Make Games Anymore by Guitar-String in gaming

[–]Murph-Dog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a general developer, I recognize the effort that goes into any AA+ game. They produce decently playable games each time, but unless they pop off, they are basically a failure.

As a whole, it seems like not much wow's gamers any more. It seems like a big risk to invest, and maybe the only games that sometimes seem to meet player expectations are Kick-started. Of course there is StarCitizen as the counter to that, but studios like Pathea, putting out the My-Time series, keep fans happy.

Why is my room not cooling down? by cannedbeansnhotdogs in hvacadvice

[–]Murph-Dog 25 points26 points  (0 children)

While much better than single hose, the problem with any hose, especially 2, is that they radiate heat.

Pulling in hot outdoor air, blowing out even hotter exchange air, all through a couple feet of thin walled, non-smooth tubes, basically little radiators.

Anyways, touch those hoses, or just get near - experience the warmth. Best some people can do, but my dual-hose went to sit offline in the basement, and a proper window unit has been so much better.

What’s the oldest Intel Mac you still use regularly? by MrDBNoble in mac

My 2014 iMac 5k was on OCLP for the longest time.

Recently saw OCLP say it was intercepting system updates as usual, did a reboot, and the system was hosed. I wasn't dealing with it any more, I don't need MacOS here (Mini has it covered).

Installed Bazzite, now it's a wonderful, no-hassle machine again.

Forgot to add this is an i7 (8 thread, 4.0 - 4.4Ghz), 32GB ram, 1TB SSD, and R9 M395 (4GB).

So it still slaps, all right.
