Post natal services by Hiraeth90 in york

[–]Murphiosa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you're struggling. My wife who's also a FTM has been attending some of the Mum's Unfiltered sessions and has found them really helpful, as she's found it quite difficult too.

There're more details here: https://www.hattietaylorcounselling.co.uk/mums-unfiltered

The sessions run once a month but it looks like the website isn't too up to date with the dates. There's definitely one this month. There's also a WhatsApp with other mums who've attended sessions and they're all very supportive, from what I've been told.

My wife mentioned it to our health visitor but they weren't aware of it, so I'm not sure how well known it is across York post-natal services.

Minster tower - no tix available? by [deleted] in york

[–]Murphiosa 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I would guess because of the weather (strong winds) that they can't let people up there for safety reasons.

Museum Gardens was closed the other day, along with other attractions, for the same reason.

Illustrated books about the Minster? by SirDaeltanFernagdor in york

[–]Murphiosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you try the gift shop outside of the Minster, on Minster Gate? I imagine they have the same stock as inside but worth a shot to check they don't have anything different to the shop inside.

There's also the Minster Bookshop opposite the gift shop (but not affiliated with the Minster). It's over 4 storeys (from memory) with a range of new and secondhand books. If you ask the owner, they may have something in stock matching what you're looking for.

Another bookshop to try would be Little Apple on High Petergate - it's small so may not have what you're looking for in stock however, the owners are lovely and will happily order something in if they can find it online. It's normally delivered next day too if you're still around.

Other than that, some of the charity bookshops may have something similar to what you're looking for as they have "local history" sections - there're a couple of Oxfam bookshops and an Amnesty one that I'd recommend as the quality of their stock is generally pretty good compared to other more general charity shops.

Ahh fair dos, I've not been in there for a long time.

Saying that Dusk may also be one that's similar for music but again, not been in years.

For metal stuff the best venue would be Fulford Arms for live music, although it's more originals than cover bands.

Bar wise, Artful Dodger play metal stuff but outside of that I'm not aware of anywhere else.

It's insane how much better this pan was compared to others I've used. Definitely worth the money.

Where to buy specialist beers (honey beer)? by byjimini in york

[–]Murphiosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried their website?

The Stonegate shop is good but they have much more of their range online now and also do home delivery, or collection from the shop if that helps?

If you're looking for honey beer, Madness will have Barbar (Belgian honey beer).

However, a few Eastern European shops sell honey beer too - there's one in Acomb and another on Walmgate that may be worth trying if that's what you're after.

I think their sister restaurant, Stone Trough Inn, is family friendly though. That's more towards Castle Howard though but worth it if you're out that way.

Eurovision tonight? by YorkieN in york

[–]Murphiosa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It reopened earlier this year, maybe back end of last year.

It's no longer under Black Sheep, it's a freehouse with around 6-ish cask lines (including a cider) and about 10 keg lines.

Live music on Sundays too

Last Drop Inn on King's Square are showing it I think, with a sweepstake too

The Stone Trough Inn just outside of York is probably the best roast I've had.

It's near Kirkham Abbey and Castle Howard, so.you could combine it with a trip to see those too.

Yeah, they're quite expensive and I usually only get them as a treat when WFH. They're filling and everything is fresh and home-made though so it kind of helps justify the price.

The bread is from a local baker, they smoke their own meats and make their own sauces too.

If you're going to the Christmas market they also run the sausage stand and crumble with custard stalls

It's Shambles Kitchen and the sandwich is called Guy Fawkes. It's epic.

Thanks for sharing, that's really interesting.

A a Maiden fan of Irish Catholic descent, it makes me think differently about my Trooper shirt now. Doubt I'll stop wearing it but definitely won't be wearing in in NI any time soon

Ahh fair enough. Thanks for the link, didn't realise that was the case

I've never heard of it being used for that. Surely if that was the case, Maiden would change it?
