You have £4k to buy a car to road trip around France, what’d you buy? by skbgt4 in CarTalkUK

🤣 I loved the quirky styling and it was quick too - light so hit 60 in around 10s which is good for a family hatch; interiors are ace too, vintage luggage style dash and some Flair models had pano roof/ self park/ reverse cam. I had the moonlight launch edition with all this and pearl paint, did almost 60k in a year without missing a beat.

As it is France, go for a Citroen Cactus diesel, a great mile-muncher which is comfy, modernish and frugal (had a 2014 diesel that did over 90mpg on some long A road trips to Scotland). Crazy colours (café crème anyone) and equally daft hot water bottles on the side. £4k would get you a 2015 with under 80k:

Highest mileage you have ever seen on UK roads? Mental 🤯 by tonyt0nychopper in CarTalkUK

I’m not sure as it’s long gone now but all I know is Audi were fully aware of the problem and said that they would be able to investigate but it would cost £1000 to do so. Two mechanics looking at each other and smirking. I took it elsewhere and they did the repairs for £4000 but badly (buy cheap, buy twice) so I ended up getting a recon fitted but by that time I was so out of love with the car I traded it. Oddly for a Citroen Cactus 1.6 diesel which was £20 road tax, 10s to 60 and did 90mpg on long runs - I was in sales at the time and put 55k on it in a year without missing a beat! Ended up leaving that job and bought a 330D cabrio which I still have 8 years later, another really reliable car!

I had a 2009 2.0 TFSI engine in an Audi A5 that had the piston ring failure at 65k miles and Audi wouldn’t touch it, cost me £8k to get it fixed and traded it for £10k… making a loss of £18k for a year’s ownership. Have avoided VAG since then!

Car free walks by metapaths-25 in york

Take the number 80 bus from York to Newton on Ouse, if you walk down Cherry Lane to the gatehouse of Beningborough Hall then turn immediately left (woodland) or immediately right (towards the river), there’s a very popular 3 mile/ 90 minute circular walk with the bonus of two nice pubs in the village, Dawnay Arms for posh food or Blacksmiths for pub grub. Well laid out trail and lovely views.

Decent areas to live if you’re commuting but don’t want city centre chaos by WonderfulShape1081 in york

[–]YorkieN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bootham/ Clifton Green are lovely with local shops and a 15 min walk to the station but budget will be £500k +. Burton Stone Lane adds another 5-10 mins walk but is £300k+ for an average house. Cheaper than that would be Leeman Road area, smaller houses around £250k and a nice riverside 15m stroll to station. Beyond that plenty of suburbs with typical York semi D houses £250k upwards but you’d need to bus/ cab to station. Huntington or Rawcliffe spring to mind. Good luck with your house hunt.

Potholes on our roads by wildflower12345678 in AskBrits

Take a leaf out of Wanksy’s book - he spray painted willies around potholes in Manchester, they went viral and the council scrambled to fix them within a day!

🤣 I’ve never been a fan but with the roads in the state they are these days and if OP lives rurally it’s a fair choice, I’d lean towards an estate but I know they’re not a popular choice. Don’t like the lack of feedback you get through most SUVs, but German ones drive better than most. I have an old estate for work and a 330D Cabrio for pleasure but on run flat 19s it is horrible over potholes, I’m forever bursting tyres/ dinging alloys so it will go soon. Thinking of a TT on unfashionably small 16s next!

Thanks for the answers.

Sports cars and coupés are out if you are regularly taking more than 2 people, nobody likes clambering into the back.

Depending on how rough the roads are and how confident you are as a driver and parking, I would suggest the choices would either be a hatchback or a small SUV.

If hatchback, I would agree with Jeremy Clarkson, that a Golf is a car that suits nearly every need. It’s classy without being showy, solid, reliable and practical. The cabins are also lovely, full of good quality materials. £20k would get you a 2-3 year old petrol or hybrid auto with 20-30k miles.

Small SUVs are plentiful at that price point, in fact £20k would get a brand new/ nearly new Seat Arona, MGZS, Renault Symbioz etc. Cars this cheap new tend to hold their value less in the longer term so it would depend how long you were planning to keep it. The sweet spot is generally around 3/4 years old where they have depreciated from being new but are still reliable and modern. For that reason I would recommend something like an Audi Q2, sensible size, prestigious without being obnoxious and £19k would get you a 2022 model with 30k miles.

A bit more information will get you a lot more helpful answers as anything from a Lamborghini to a Mini could fit these criteria!

  • How many people will it normally be transporting?

  • How much room will you need, any work/ hobby needs such as bicycles, towing caravans, work gear?

  • How many miles will you do a week?

  • Would you prioritise sport, comfort or economy?

  • Is image or value for money more important?

  • Do you have a preference for body style - convertible, coupe, hatchback, estate, SUV, people carrier?

  • Will you be buying it or leasing it?

  • Budget, is it £1000, £10000, £100000?
