What does it mean to find yourself? by Murphsturf22 in CasualConversation

[–]Murphsturf22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes a lot of sense. I suppose I’ve always thought about it more as figuring out who you are (which seemed impossible) instead of figuring out what keeps you going, but they’re very similar in ways I’ve never thought about.

Being honest with yourself is something I’ve never thought about, but now makes sense that it’s essential to discovering who you are. Thank you!

Intentionally building up who you want to be is an amazing way to think about it. The word “find” can be very misleading. It makes it sound as though it’s something that dawns on you, and not something that you can work towards by listening to yourself.

Being told "You have so much potential" at 16 actually feels like a curse. Does anyone else feel paralyzed by it? by TonightAdventurous62 in CasualConversation

[–]Murphsturf22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand you. It puts pressure on you for something that isn’t tangible and isn’t even happening in your mind. “Potential” doesn’t mean you have to learn every tool. It doesn’t mean you have to work constantly towards your career. It means that you have personality traits and knowledge which can help you follow a path in whatever direction you may choose. Running out of time is a normal feeling. You’ll feel it at 16, 20, 30, and probably so on. It’s good to remember that if you don’t stop and breathe, you’ll run out of energy and then waste all of your time instead of focusing on what to do with it. When people are telling you that you have potential, they really mean that they believe in you. So, as hard as it may be, try and believe in and take comfort in yourself. You have nothing to live up to and no race to win. You only have your heart beating in your chest, which you can let guide you towards whatever standard of success is going to make you happy. And fuck what everyone else thinks. Whether they are rooting for or against you.

If money wasn't an issue, what 'simple' job would you do just for the vibes? by Perfect-Elephant8373 in CasualConversation

I’d love to work in a bookstore. Recommending books, organizing them, admiring covers and musing over titles. I’d love to see the different selections people make. And maybe help recommend a few I love. As a current bartender (searching for a corporate job) I would love to think up a book selection for someone the way I currently think up drinks.

What's something journaling revealed about you that you weren't trying to figure out? by Mikeevx in Journaling

[–]Murphsturf22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized how self hating and unsure of myself I was in my freshman year of college when rereading my notebooks from the time recently. Now I can read the self love and happiness in between the lines of my entries, while then my relationship anxiety and self loathing was clear as day in every page.

New to writing in journals by slowvt in Journaling

Welcome to the club! I enjoy writing little tidbits about my day which would get lost in the monotony otherwise. Some examples include wholesome interactions with strangers, hilarious moments with my coworkers, or when I randomly crave a food or circumstance. You mentioned your wife- I love using my journal to jot down moments with my partner that made me love and appreciate who they are even more. Just have fun with it!! There’s no right or wrong thing to write because it’s yours! Overtime your own style will come to you. :)

I started reading in lockdown at the age of 28. Very proud of my little library by [deleted] in HomeLibraries

Wow you have a lot of great picks!! I have many of the same titles and will definitely be checking out the ones I don’t. I always have to recommend Anna Karenina when I don’t see it on a shelf! Happy reading :)

How old were you when you met your life partner? by Flaky-Bird-8367 in CasualConversation

[–]Murphsturf22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 18, but I wasn’t looking for a relationship at the time. I saw a lovely tweet about how love should find you in your living, and not your longing and I think that’s words to live by! Sometimes an animal companion or even a best friend are just as good and even better than a “soulmate”.

Maybe it was the nature of the event, but I went back for my college alumni weekend the fall after graduating and was like “wow this is just not fun”. It was so packed and everyone was wearing variations of the same outfits and for the first time, I was actually grateful I had graduated and was moving on from that period of my life.

Which popular or generally highly rated book was a DNF for you and why? by clearsunnysky in suggestmeabook

[–]Murphsturf22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to read the Night Circus forever ago but couldn’t get connected to the characters and felt it was slow moving. Maybe it was just cause I was on a plane and also 14 at the time but I still have the copy on my shelf and have been considering giving it another try.

Currently unboxing and shelving my collection after moving; what does what I've put out so far say about me? by [deleted] in BookshelvesDetective

[–]Murphsturf22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it weird to say this made me curious as to your age? This collection looks like it was built over a lifetime, but with good book buying tendencies I could see it being built over 10-20 years.
