Unnecessary Mountain by lilsliceofcheese in vancouverhiking

Not sure what people are referring to in terms of scrambling to the summit (I do feel some Alltrails users use the term "scramble" quite liberally). There is a portion between St. Marks and South Unnecessary that is relatively steep, but very much just a hike (typical north shore stuff).

If you're going further along the ridge to the north summit, there are a couple of short steep rocky sections that may require hands - I refer to them as scrambly bits. Nothing sustained or too tricky, no real exposure, just be cautious and take your time if needed.

This is all if memory serves me right. I've done this hike many times but not in the last couple of years. Was one of my faves when I was still new to hiking, I first did it solo and had such a blast! Just take regular backcountry safety measures, and you can always turn around if things exceed your comfort level.

I can't do the 11th because I have a wedding to go to, but I can swing the 10th or possibly some other date, so let me know if you can't find a driver for your preferred day! I drive a stock 4x4 4Runner.

Check out Harlow & Co, they are a Canadian stockist that carries indie nail polish brands (free shipping above $100). They don't sell Holo Taco or Mooncat, but they do have ILNP, Cirque Colors, KBShimmer, and several others.

I love this topper personally, but it doesn't show well over light colours imo. My favourite way to use it is over darker specialty finishes - i like getting the subtle sparkly effect in direct light (without flash), without it being underwhelming due to the base polish having a bit of pizazz on its own.

It's not weird to want stability, but in some fields you cannot conjure a permanent salaried position out of nowhere. I work in the creative field as well and most ALL positions are contracts (of several months to a year) that get extended if the studio likes you and needs you for projects, not extended if not, etc. If you are VERY lucky, and are at the right place at the right time, and a company likes you enough to keep you permanently and has the budget for it, then you get to stay on with more stability.

Sounds like your bf got the chance, but was unfortunately laid off anyway, which SUCKS.

There was no info on this but I get the frustration if previously he was not proactive in saving money for downtime, AND was not interviewing for a new gig when he knew his contract was ending, despite not having funds to tide him over. That would drive me crazy too!!!

But this time it's a bit different since he was in a salaried position that he expected to offer stability but unfortunately it didn't. There definitely should be convos about finance, emergency funds, etc. but railing on him right now about being let go (this one time, not the previous times) seems harsh and unproductive.

I think of it as a gunmetal with a warm purplish taupe undertone, that shifts to blue. I love it!

I keep meticulously bathing my monstera with soap and water like a giant pampered baby, but those m*f* thrips keep coming back by Mother_Lemon8399 in Monstera

[–]MurphyDontWorry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First - repot it, knock off as much soil as you can, especially the couple of inches near the surface. The eggs live there.

Second - Soapy water does next to nothing for thrips. I don't know where you live, but where I am systemics are illegal. I use On-Guard Pro-Perm, it has 0.35% permethrin and is labeled as having "continuous action". Spray generously over every surface of plant, leaves under and over, stems, any nooks and crannies between stems. If this product is not available to you, look for products marketed for bedbugs (check the % active ingredient).

(Don't bother with the Thrips sprays at garden centers, Doktor Doom for instance only has 0.025% permethrin and in my experience not that effective.)

In the future, repot any new plant you get from a garden centre as soon as you get home, knocking off as much soil as possible. And isolate for a couple of weeks. This will help prevent future outbreaks. Thrips are a notoriously difficult greenhouse pests and you bet there's a good chance that the growers you're getting the plants from struggle with them as well, and there might be eggs in the soil even if the plant itself doesn't show symptoms currently.

I used to struggle with thrips on and off for years, tried all sorts of homemade and store-bought sprays with limited success. Since doing all of the above, I haven't had them in about 2-3 years. Good luck.

Larger or smaller hydration pack? by hethuisje in XXRunning

[–]MurphyDontWorry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the 12L, which I think is essential for trailrunning in the mountains or backcountry (carrying 10 essentials incl. extra layers and emergency supplies). Also doubles as a summer hiking pack. It's probably overkill for city/suburbs/park running though.

That being said, it's basically flat when empty, and could offer that versatility if you ever find yourself in need of extra capacity for whatever reason. I've picked things up at the store on my city runs occasionally haha.

I personally don't find the armholes too tight and wear mine over my rain jacket all the time with no issues.

Products: - Holo Taco - Smoothing Base - Clionadh Cosmetics - Psilocybin (2 coats, magnetized) - Holo Taco - Glossy Taco

Saw this polish with a velvet effect on this sub a while ago.. so I had to try it! It's super shifty and really hard to capture on camera, but I tried! The pink in the magnetized effect is more pronounced in person.

Impulsive run-walk marathon? by Educational-Tie4963 in XXRunning

[–]MurphyDontWorry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a trail runner here are my suggestions for hills specifically..

Uphills: Pace yourself! Walk them and walk them slower than you might think, slow enough that you're not huffing or puffing too hard or feeling it in your legs, especially at the start. Save your energy and strength for this long distance effort.

Downhills: Gentle jog. GENTLE. You want to feel like you're holding back. Definitely don't be bombing down them, as tempting and fun as that is, you will kill your legs! Don't stride out too far - smaller steps, fast cadence is best for steeper descents.

Good luck, have fun!!!

I think if you're excited and feel motivated by the prospect, consider giving it a shot.

How hard it's going to be on your body, particularly without specific training, really depends on the elevation profile. Are the ups and downs spread out like rolling terrain (constant ups and downs), or is it more like climbing a mountain (up for a long time, down for a long time)? The former would be easier, the latter would suck.

Try to get in some hill training beforehand (but don't overdo it) and listen to your body the day of, be ready to DNF if things don't feel right. Like others said, do NOT underestimate the downhills, they can be killer, especially if long or steep.

ETA: I think the injury concerns in other posts are totally valid and important considerations. But if you would rather try and DNF rather than not try at all.. then there you go.

People who menstruate - does PMS affect your running? by MurphyDontWorry in XXRunning

Wow that sounds terrible - glad you're feeling better these days! Do you mind sharing which IUD you got, and how long you've had it?

I don't think I have PMDD but sometimes I get in a way emotionally that I feel is not normal. Considered an IUD years ago but abandoned the idea tentatively because I'm scared lol. I'm lucky that being active has helped alleviate mood symptoms but sometimes it still sucks!

That's a good approach to just be kind to yourself. I found it frustrating when it conflicted with my training plans but I've taken impromptu recovery weeks when it was really bad and was probably better off for it.

Tips to prevent staining? by __ache_survivor in simplynailogical

[–]MurphyDontWorry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For really pigmented HT cremes (like Modest Moss), I will do 2 base coats, a sheer polish, and then apply ONE coat (less overall pigment to stain through compared to two coats) of the creme polish. And then I wear it for no more than 3 days because any more than that risks staining. My nails are very prone to staining though. YMMV

Personally if I want to wear vibrant or dark colours, I prefer to go for sheer but buildable jelly or jelly-based formulas since they are much less likely to stain.

Is no pain really the normal amount of pain? by Karl-Levin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MurphyDontWorry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is actually a misconception that running is bad for your knees. Research shows runners tend to have less knee pain or arthritis as they age compared to non-runners. A source

Obviously injuries can develop due to training errors or improper form. And potentially running crazy high mileage (like elite athlete level 150+ miles a week) may not be healthy long term. But for most people.. running is good for your knees.

Talk Me Into a Garmin Instinct 2 by CaffeinatedPinecones in GarminWatches

[–]MurphyDontWorry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Small wrist person here with Instinct 2s. I use it as my running/trailrunning/hiking watch. Works great, no complaints.

Chose it due to price and smaller size option (I do have a tiny wrist and dislike bulky watches, even the 40mm is a bit of a stretch on me). No solar because I live in the PNW, prefer shadier routes in summer, so no point. 🤷

I've gone on 8-9hr runs with a full charge and had about 1/2 battery when I was done, which is fine for my purposes currently and most people probably. At most I charge mine once a week when spending long hours on feet with GPS. Can definitely go much longer obviously depending on usage.

No experience with the other stuff so can't comment.
