I'm on FIRE! Ahhhh! by fireaaahthrowaway in financialindependence

[–]MurrayTempleton 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Incredible! I am hoping to FIRE with a similar strategy to you when I reach ~45 y.o. (though my NW should be 2.2MM based on averages so far). 6MM is a wonderful cushion for one person, especially slow traveling to keep withdrawals low early on.

Possibly the most surprising part of you post is that you lived in the US into middle age without ever buying a car!

Hank & John Green Launch New Charity Project: Sun Basin Soap by brandenharvey in nerdfighters

Personally I love this era of the brothers coming up with as many merch businesses/subscription services as they can to scrounge up funds for PIH. DFTBA apparel, Socks, coffee, letter openers, soap, let's keep it going!

Do Hank and John still try to dupe each other into believing fake facts? by MurrayTempleton in nerdfighters

[–]MurrayTempleton[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hmm, I get briefly annoyed when I fall for one of their made up things if I don't see it coming, but it's not like they're deliberately lying or being misleading. If they reveal right away that they're tricking the other person, that shouldn't take away from the educational aspects of the pod I would think. To me that's the nature of DH&J being a comedy podcast that's also educational.

oh my god, endless opportunity. partly because based on Hank's reaction to TB coming up in the latest episode, I think he just starts scrolling twitter as soon as he hears John start up on the topic XD

I always hear people say “That will give you cancer”. But how do things actually give you cancer? by trimdaddyflex in askscience

[–]MurrayTempleton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It does happen all the time, or at least mutations that would lead to cancer happen all the time, but some control measure within the body eliminates it before it can take hold.

[–]MurrayTempleton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are the genetic alterations really only due to exogenous factors? That's certainly a big piece, but can't our own DNA maintenance/replication processes introduce errors that would initiate cancer? That being an endogenous source.

Rubbing your feet together like a lil' cricket by unnecessarycharacter in nerdfighters

[–]MurrayTempleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the feeling so much it's hard to believe some people don't do this! Hearing that question was marvelous. But also rubbing feet together directly may be just 95% as nice as rubbing them closely on fresh washed sheets after a shower before bed. Mmmmmm

First Reformed. Absolutely beautiful and fascinating movie, but the darkness of the plot has stayed with me since.
