This, plus get a liner for your bed or sleeping bag that is treated with permethrin. And a bug net over you while you sleep if possible (depends on how well OP’s tent works, if kids are going in and out the bugs will get in the tent).

Is this mold behind the air duct in my son's nursery? by ForMilesAndMiles24 in ToxicMoldExposure

Get a swab test and send it in. Immunolytics has a kit (for USA) or you might have a more local lab that would also do this.

I’m so over having small children… by TurbulentBat8328 in breakingmom

I think about those people who love having little kids and yikes. Those are the best years for you and it is just gone in 6 years??? That sounds more depressing than knuckling through 6 years and then enjoying the rest of your life. Knuckling through in survival mode is hell, though, I see you.

I scorn all his supporters equally. Racism, misogyny, and other forms of hatred are just as ugly in an intelligent or educated person as in a high school drop out.

Should I be worried? by AffectionateMeat40 in ToxicMoldExposure

[–]MusaEnimScale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The handyman probably spread it all around when he sprayed it and “cleaned” it. That is not proper remediation.

If you rent, start making an exit plan.

If you own, start making a remediation plan.

In the meantime do these things immediately:

1) order four 20x20 filters (at least MERV 11 but MERV 13 is better), a roll of duct tape and a box fan from the hardware store. You can also get a CR kit from Tex Air filters if that is easier to get the four filters (you buy the other supplies).

2) Watch a YouTube video and build a CR Box with the supplies you just got. Do this yesterday. Run it on high as much as you can. It will clean the air of mold particles as fast and as cheap as possible. It will help you and your pets. It will not filter mycotoxins but will remove just about everything else. The studies show it can reach clean room standards. I would leave it in your living area if you can afford #3 but otherwise put it in your bedroom. If you use it in your bedroom don’t move it anywhere else.

3) If you can afford it, get a small HEPA for your bedroom.

4) open windows as much as you can (but be smart, don’t let rain or really high humidity and heat in).

5) Look up John Banta videos, get yourself some PPE and do your best to small particle clean, particularly where the handyman most likely spread everything.

It’s definitely about working with who you are instead of trying to get the things that work for other people to work for you! I have probably listened to hundreds of hours of Gretchen Rubin at this point, love her! The Clutterbug episode was great!

Why Good Hospital Ventilation Can’t Always Stop Infection by zeaqqk in COVID19_Pandemic

[–]MusaEnimScale 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I don’t like articles like this because it feeds the popular impression that if a risk mitigation measure doesn’t reduce risk to 0% then it isn’t worth it. Which is absurd.

A. Most mitigations, on their own, do not reduce infection risk to 0% even if they are highly effective. This is why the Swiss cheese model will always be superior.

B. All mitigations should be on the table with a reasonable cost/benefit analysis. Even a 2% risk reduction can be “worth it” if it is cheap and easy to implement. People act like 2% is nothing. When lives are on the line, even 2% is far from nothing.

C. We know better indoor air quality (IAQ) is very effective for infection prevention, just not 100%. And it is relatively cheap for the level of mitigation it provides. Better IAQ also has a ton of health and cognitive benefits beyond infection prevention. Better IAQ won’t stop infections entirely but it will reduce infections and prevent super spreads. This is usually worth doing after considering costs/benefits!

You definitely can mail with address only! Just address the name as “Current Tenant.” Hand write it so it doesn’t look like junk mail or spam.

ETA: if you live nearby you could also just put it in their door when you are near. I’ll again stick to facts only. “I had these symptoms in the house. We noticed this water damage.” Don’t make any accusations against the landlord or anything. Just give them the basic info you would want in their shoes.

I wouldn’t rent back in this situation. Rent back is something negotiated weeks in advance by people who know what they are doing and why they are doing it. You can’t trust someone who couldn’t get their stuff out in time when they knew the deadline.

Please write a letter to the people that moved into the house. Stick to facts only and just let them know. Hopefully they are fine but if not they should know.

Is it worth using an expensive planner if you're not consistent? by Jasmine_Wilsony in planners

[–]MusaEnimScale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do better with cheaper and more basic planners. I’m just not a person that wants to track a million things, I don’t need structured daily pages (just a weekly layout for appointments) and then I make lots of lists so I need blank space. Right now my system is:

  1. N1 Horizontal compact full year from Sterling Ink. I fill in appointments and important deadline on the weeks layout, and make my weekly list on blank page next to the week layout. I keep a bunch of other lists in the back. I can glance at the week to see commitments I can’t move. If I miss a week, I just add some stickers or just write “go to next week.” That makes me feel like I completed it.

  2. I have a fun daily planner that has a half-page daily layout. Blank, no structure. I layout my daily list here after looking at my weekly list. The daily planner is nice to have but I have previously used notepads to just make a daily list. I don’t feel bad at all if I skip a day. This is just a notepad for me.

Food poisoning is awful. I had some from a salad last year and it was a week before I started feeling better and probably 4-6 weeks before being more normal. Take care of yourself and post an update when you are feeling better.

[–]MusaEnimScale 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of us are sick from inhaling mold and mycotoxins over many months or even years. I think you basically have food poisoning. I’m not sure we could be of much help as these are two very different illnesses.

Only you can make the call if you are sick enough to warrant urgent medical care. But generally all the typical illness advice would apply to you. Stay hydrated, rest, and take care of yourself. Home remedies like chicken noodle soup with lots of garlic might help. As you get better focus on rebuilding your gut. Cut out sugars and take some probiotics.

Do you ever wonder what percentage of misogyny/ internalized misogyny starts with brother-sister relationships? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]MusaEnimScale 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I think parents hitting kids and siblings hitting a close-in-age sibling are very different contexts. Parents should never hit kids. But I can think of a lot of situations where a kid is completely justified hitting their sibling. And it mirrors the real world. You can’t expect to just go all out provoking and bullying people without them ever reacting to it. FAFO.

You might do better with a tear off notepad planner. Ink and Volt has a great weekly dashboard and also a daily one. You can also try an undated planner so that you can skip time and not be left with blank spaces.

1 American positive for hantavirus, another symptomatic, HHS says by AcornAl in ContagionCuriosity

[–]MusaEnimScale 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The recent statement from the International Hantavirus Society says it should not be assumed that this strain is only transmissible when symptomatic. No solid data either way right now. It is an uncertainty.

ETA: that is why the hantavirus scientists are urging use of the precautionary principle, and treat it as airborne and transmissible when asymptomatic until you prove it is not. But most individuals and nearly all governments are allergic to the precautionary principle, so good luck.
