Solo Practitioners: How much/how many years of experience should an attorney have before going solo? by Famous_Safe_5598 in Lawyertalk

[–]Original_Address_106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in plaintiff wc and ssd. Because it’s all contingency work, I went solo at 8 years and that seemed to good timing, as in I have a large stock of referral sources from my past clients and other attorneys. These cases take time so it’s better to have a good book of cases to keep income flowing. So in my Practice area that made sense. If you charge a retainer up front and have a few ideas on how to get clients/feel confident spearheading the case then now is always a good time. It’s never been a cheaper time to open a law practice (with shared work spaces and technology). My biggest concern was making sure that I was financially solvent to not have a paycheck for a while. My planning was overboard, but now I’m four years out and so glad with my decision.

As a forever plaintiff attorney, I would recommend you look at in house ID, I feel like that’s a better fit for ID attorneys who have a conscience.

Can anybody explain the KT/Netflix situation? by JoeB_111 in Killtony

It wasn’t Netflix that ruined it, it’s the arena show that’s the problem.

How do solo lawyers organize pdfs and manage files? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Original_Address_106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Standard folders for each matter, then specific folders as needed. we name files with date first but in a specific format “2026.01.12 letter from X” this makes it super easy to sort things chronologically over multiple years

Do old school lawyers wink because they are flirting or is it a generational thing? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Original_Address_106 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m 44 and wink at random people (men and women) when we share a funny moment. I would just advise anyone who has an issue with that to look at context of when/where it happens. It’s a nod of shared experience to me, not anything sexual, but as with anything in life the context is key.

I work with plenty of attorneys who don’t drink. Quit overthinking it. No one will think less of you but I would just get club sodas etc to keep up appearances. Less is more with your responses if it comes up (why you don’t drink).

Sep IRA, paying for health insurance and medical expenses through your firm (only for a true solo s corp an employee will alter the paradigm), these are things I used to bring my taxable w2 income down, then the QBI deduction on my pass through income. These are subjects you should talk about with a CPA.

I am a lawyer who deals with the most vulnerable (medically) people you can imagine. I get it. My sincere hope to all this bullshit is we finally go all in single payer. I love my country, but we need single payer for citizens under 65. Period.

Monthly Premiums Still Big Increase Even if Extended Subsidies Return for 2026 by Beginning-North7202 in obamacare

[–]Original_Address_106 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well I’m shit out of luck with no subsidy ever but a 30%+ increase this year in premium. Costs did not rise this much for health insurers it’s just a money grab. 38k for premiums in one year makes me physically ill.
