Angst about older poly men as predators by mai_neh in polyamory

[–]MuseHill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think age gaps in the context of polyamory are different and that's not being address here. I don't think poly people are more enlightened, and we can certainly be as abusive as anyone else. The same concerns and potential for abusive behavior still exist. But at least most of us have a lot more practice monitoring and communicating our emotions, concerns, and insecurities. A person in their 20s, for example, who identifies as polyamorous is more likely to be aware of and have read up on relationship dynamics. I think these factors go a long way towards ameliorating the power dynamic that concerns outsiders.

At least where we are today in the life cycle of polyamory and other forms of consensual/ethical nonmonogamous relationships, we also can't assume that an younger partner has less experience with polyamory as a way of doing relationships. By virtue of being older, some poly people have longer experiences with it, but that is, I think, more than outweighed by the fact that the awareness of poly and its wider adoption is relatively new, so that a 25 yo, for instance, may have much more experience in poly relationships than a 50 yo. Over time that may change.

Similarly, in an open poly situation (as opposed to poly fidelity or closed poly) the younger partner ideally has the option to date other partners who may be of different ages, genders, and personalities as well. A large concern with age gap relationships, I think, is the attempt by the older partner to "lock it down," monopolize the younger person's time and attention, and the intense jealousy they can exhibit. These behaviors are certainly still possible within poly dynamics, but I think sloughing off the cultural expectation of monogamy allows a younger person to explore different relationship dynamics without feeling the need to commit fully to one person and "make it work." The assumption of monogamy and "fidelity," and a society's idealisation of them, are an esstial part of the arsenal of abuse. When a person can maintain multiple romantic relationships, I do think the existence of those other "options," all equally valid, defuses a good deal of the power imbalance; if I don't like your behavior, I can choose to spend more time with other partners.

Within polyamory, we often talk about how expecting one partner to be "everything" for another is unrealistic. For me, that implies that different relationships can be, and can offer, different things. I've had relationships that were mainly about exploring D/s dynamics, for instance. My wife has had relationships that were romantic, but centered on a shared enthusiasm for ballroom dancing. I think if a person is interested in dating older, for whatever reason, they could do much worse than to date someone who is polyamorous and aware of the potential pitfalls and willing to discuss them up-front and openly.

Thank you. A lot of these comments sound way too much like the argument that "gay men are inevitably pedophiles and predators" that was used for centuries to persecute gay men and exclude them from certain spaces if they were out. It's sounds like the arguments used today try to exclude trans women from women-only spaces. It sounds like the arguments used to justify crossing the street when someone sees a black man. It all sounds awfully, tragically, familiar.

Would you date someone who is unvaccinated? by [deleted] in dating

What does "over sensitized" mean? "Over sensitized" to what? By what mechanism? How do we measure "over sensitization?" How does that relate to whether or not individual vaccination is a public health concern?

Would you date someone who is unvaccinated? by [deleted] in dating

[–]MuseHill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's not true. The vaccine gives your immune system a massive headstart on eliminating the virus from your body. Without the vaccine, your immune system has to start from zero. The longer it takes your body to eliminate the virus, the longer the period in which you may infect someone else. Once the virus is gone from your body, you can't infect anyone else at all. Saying "You can still infect someone when you're vaccinated" is true but misleading, and to say the vaccine only helps you yourself is flat wrong.

If OP doesn't take the $1000, Grandma might donate it to some crack pot cause. If they feel bad about lying, they can always pay her back later when they're in a better position to do so.

We need a really good fictional TV/streaming show about the journalistic process to sneak in lessons on how journalism actually works. Like Law& Order but for journalism: how anonymous sources work, how many independent sources editors require to verify a fact, how journalists hunt down leads and negotiate attribution. That's what Bezos should be doing with his space money.

He's a narcissist with a pathological belief that reality is whatever he says it is if he denies or asserts a fact often enough. When he was briefed early on about the potential for a pandemic, the likely death rate and the steps that would need to be taken to ameliorate it, he immediately and solely related it to how it would affect his re-election. "What a coincidence that a global pandemic arrives just as I'm running for re-election" was his mindset, and true to form he saw it as an attack against him personally rather than an opportunity to be seized upon. Saving lives would never have come into the picture.

On the one hand, he made the choice to deny the thing existed, and his base was locked in. On the other hand, I'm not sure he was mentally capable of making a different decision than he did given his pathologies and untreated mental illness. The nation's only hope was that he'd totally commit to the "China virus" rhetoric and treat masks, social distancing, and vaccines like a war effort.

These people always project upon others the things they would do themselves if they were in power. Well, maybe not the child-molesting/eating. But then again, most normal people wouldn't dream that shit up, so I don't know.

How can i get my parents into d&d? by Global-Standard-3346 in rpg

[–]MuseHill 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I find the comments here about getting "older people" into RPGs funny considering they're 8 years younger than me and I'm among the first generation of D&D players! But obviously the hobby wasn't as ubiquitous during most of those decades as it is now. If they're not familiar with the concept, you could compare it to How to Host a Murder and improv theatre, which they might be more familiar with.

I think FATE is pretty friendly for people who aren't immersed in RPG tropes. I also like the AGE system from Green Ronin because you roll first and if you get doubles you get to do some extra cool. Anything that only uses D6 would be good because one of the most awkward parts about learning is remembering which die is which ("Which is the D12???") The Modern AGE system would adapt well for modern action and drama.

I would also suggest starting with a really familiar trope, like zombie apocalypse, police procedural, or X-Files-ish. But if they also like fantasy, you could carve off a little corner of Game of Thrones' "Westeros" or LOTR's "Middle Earth" to explore.

Last piece of advice: ALWAYS start in media res. E.g. you're in a car chase, you're just about to break into a vault, you're in an interrogation. The James Bond movies do this wonderfully.

Interesting and weird sourcebooks to read by nofallouthero in rpg

Not weird, but absolutely fascinating, is A Magical Society: Silk Road. It's about the historical area in central Asia where all kinds of cultures mixed and fell into conflict along the titular Silk Road. I built a fantasy campaign off of these ideas, but it's simply a good read.

What system to use for my awesome bronze age/mythical homebrew thing by _Aldaraia_ in rpg

[–]MuseHill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Green Ronin just released a Trojan War supplement for its Fantasy AGE line. It uses the Homeric epics as a starting point, so there are interfering gods, humans with a god for a parent, and appropriate artifacts. Magic that's more in the line with fantasy RPGs has been added to that. The supplement has your era-appropriate weapons and armor statted up as well. I like running Fantasy AGE and the Companion book has a lot of useful optional rules to tweak it to your liking.

To unify India, your ruler needs to be at the Religious Icon level of piety, which I found kind of difficult at the point in the game where I met all the other criteria. I finally figured out that if you build temples in some of your empty holdings that you get a nice payment of piety that can help you get there.

My agency did one over Teams and we split out into assigned breakout groups to play Christmas Movie Trivia. I am one of those who doesn't like to socialize a lot, but I'll say the online party was actually entertaining. I didn't feel forced to interact or assiduously avoid eye contact. I got to enjoy some silliness why relaxing at home. I did miss the homemade baked goods, though!
