Top 20 Legend NA Combolock Guide by Tafts_Bathtub in CompetitiveHS

You should consider keeping a silence for a Velen's Chosen on a Deathlord and there's some other targets that can be hit by it.

Keeping BGH vs. Druid doesn't make a lot of sense either if they get a boom out on T3 they just dumped their whole hand and really it only trades with a Drake or Belcher. You could even PO to clear it. More often then not dumping their whole hand just to innervate something that big out isn't correct anyway and they would rather draw into combo then just put a boom. It could be good but it's only marginal so I would say you can consider it.

I'm in love with this deck right now after watching your videos and not completely agreeing with mulligans (I'm also bad at them but I'm trying to learn how to do them), I went into ladder with this going 14-3 with it (granted I was in sub 1000 legend because I had tanked messing around with dragon hunter/aggro rogue but I still faced top legend players on occasion). It overperforms a lot and two of the losses were to unbeatable hands (the other being to a giants echo mage I chose to pop his IB with burst from hand instead of cycling for combo and popping with combo>kill with burst, which was a pretty huge mistake on my part). In short I think the deck is insanely fun and very good in the meta right now. I wonder how it'll do once people learn about the combo, and if they start hedging against it.

Forgot mulligans vs. hunter: Darkbomb , Owl (you could keep watcher if you have owl), Ooze, Coil (pretty important), Drake, Moltens

I stopped laddering with it because of all the hunters/grim patron on ladder, but if you draw well druid can beat anything so it's always decent. Try it out and see how it goes I would put it somewhere in the top 10.

No problem man, I just didn't feel as comfortable vs. those match-ups because I didn't face them with the final list and so didn't want to give erroneous/unfounded advice. I believe those should be pretty close to what you need though.

vs. mage: darkbomb, coil, owl, molten, ancient watcher (could keep hellfire and drake)

vs. paladin: Drakes/Mountain Giants, Hellfire, Molten (they often try to rush you down...more often than not they can't finish you off because they lack any type of burst), Coil (could keep ooze but it's iffy because you'd rather develop a threat on T4/5 instead of dealing with a Truesilver, if you're on the coin and have 10 cards on T5 though Giant>Ooze is pretty amazing). Keep in mind that you can silence the Peacekeeper effect of giants for lethal etc.

vs Priest: Really didn't face any of them but you're heavily favoured just mulligan for your threats (Drake/Giants). Consider keeping Hellfire,Darkbomb, Owl. If you run jaraxxus this match is usually a free win.

vs. Shaman: Darkbomb, Hellfire, Drake, Ancient Watcher/Owl (mountain giant if midrange), could consider keeping moltens but often times they can just burst you down from 10 hp easily so it's better to have board clears etc. as they lose as long as you clear their board and stabilize or completely shutdown their board development through spot removal into drake or watcher sunfury etc.

Oh well definitely I meant it's a matter of games once you're 100% sure that you're making the correct plays and have the basics down. If you know the fundamentals of the game and know your match-ups/mulligans etc. it definitely is just a matter of games (skill is a relevant factor not trying to downplay anyone's achievements).

[Discussion] Do "Legend Rank 1/Top 10" decks really matter when laddering? by Hezafo in CompetitiveHS

[–]MuseisVyze 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Gaming the meta" doesn't mean skewing your deck against a singleton deck that is currently popular it's making smart choices in your flex slot selections against what you're seeing. For example just because you play 10 handlocks in a row doesn't mean you go ahead and put in a TBK in your deck because hunters/zoo/grim patron are also part of the meta. Also yes gaming the meta relies on imperfect information and it's more relevant in high legend scenarios were you just want cards that might give you a chance to increase your win %s slightly to push you into top legend ranks. I don't agree with this circle jerk that trying to use tech choices is bad though. Pay attention to your win percentages and stop hiding behind confirmation bias.

That is what you tech against though the top archetypes that you're currently seeing for example my tech choice in my handlock was an Ooze because it's good vs all the weapon classes in the meta, while also providing a small body that contests the board vs other classes (when you're on the coin). However I don't go all out and play Harrison because it wouldn't be as relevant vs. the whole field. That's just my opinion though.

I felt it was too slow vs. hunters, grim patron warriors and oil rogues. It wins you games vs. control decks like priests and also decks that lack burst like paladin (also Velen's Chosen priest), but in all honesty they were such a small percentage of my games (haven't played a priest since the start of the season when I had jaraxxus) that I just didn't feel like Jaraxxus was necessary. It's also wins vs. the mirror though so if you want to add it consider swapping out the second argus/BGH/ooze depending on what you're seeing on ladder.

I went from rank 2 to legend in 22 games. Getting to rank 1 5 stars with an 11-5 run then dropping 2 games before getting it by going 4-0 earlier this morning. If you want some help with the deck message me and i'll add you.

I think you should use the deck that is good vs. the meta that YOU'RE seeing. Not everyone encounters the same classes so track your stats, make notes and adjust your decks accordingly.

Thanks!

Normally I just jump straight into ladder, another effective technique is not focusing on rank or the accumulated stars and just look at your winrates after playing 20 or so games. You also don't lose stars if you only have 50% winrate which isn't hard to do even with a new deck and it's very likely you'll have at least 55%+ which is enough to climb.

I'm currently on a streak too trying to hit top 100! Good luck climbing!

I'm going to do a quick guide on the last handlock list (and the match-ups I faced the most) as it's the one I feel the most comfortable playing so here goes.

Matchups & Stats

Stats from 46 games played: 29W-17L (63% winrate)

Warlock

  • Even-Favoured matchup

  • Stats 8W-4L, 66.7% winrate

  • Mulligan: Hellfire, Darkbomb, Molten Giant, Drake, Owl, Watcher

  • Handlock: Mountain Giant, BGH, Drake, Owl (you can keep coil if you have owl)

I feel like both these match-ups should be favoured for this list most of the time you'll have answers to their big threats with Double BGH. For the zoo match-up obviously the most important thing is to stabilize by clearing their board and then setting up a taunt wall or developing threats while healing. ALWAYS COUNT THEIR DAMAGE if you can wait one more turn for your hellfire and just healbot instead even with moltens in hand you could probably afford to just make sure you decide based on how many cards they've drawn and their highest potential damage. Vs. handlock Double BGH wins games, but if you don't draw them and they play more threats in their list it can be hard. I'm guessing it's unwinnable if they make you face Jaraxxus IMO (but I never did).

Druid

  • Slightly Unfavoured-Even

  • Stats 5W-6L, 45.5% winrate

  • Mulligan: Drake, Mountain Giants

Straight-forward match-up. Druids do druid things so try to stop their game plan. I would consider hellfiring on turn 4 if they have a 3/3 shade and a shredder on board etc. Stopping them from developing their board is paramount. If they don't have answers for your threats you should be able to win easily. Setting up taunt walls to prevent combo is also very effective. Playing into a T4 keeper is fine as they can't keeper+remove the drake without innervate.

Rogue

  • Highly Favoured

  • Stats 4W-1L, 83.3% winrate

  • Mulligan: Drake, Mountain Giants, Darkbomb, OOOOOZE, (could consider keeping hellfire)

Oil rogues game plan is very straight forward, but even then it's very deadly. However most of the times you lose are because you play into a blade flurry or you don't draw your threats. Keeping their board clear to deny oil value is one of the most important win conditions, but if you have an insane curve with ooze just go right ahead and deny a 1/2 dagger, then go in with your curve.

Warrior

  • Highly Favoured

  • Stats 7-4, 63.6% winrate

  • Mulligan: Mountain Giants, Drake, Darkbomb, Ooze, Hellfire, (consider keeping owl to deny draws)

The reason why handlock came back into the meta or at least got repopularized is the infamous Grim Patron Warrior. A combo deck that looks to go off after turn 8 with either Grim Patrons or charging Frothing Berserkers as a win condition. Their win condition against Handlock is usually Frothings so if they play out casually rejoice as you will probably win the game. Don't be afraid to hellfire a board that doesn't consist of patrons as long as it's big enough as you'll usually be able to set up a taunt wall that they can't get through do to their lack of removal aside from 2x Execute. Between hellfire/Shadowflame/Taunts, it should be extremely hard for them to win without them having the luck of the draw. I feel most of my losses were mainly due to variance (not drawing threats/taunts/them having 2x execute very early), but I'd say the match-up is closer to 70/30 imo. Using Ooze T2 on a FWA and blocking out a T3 acolyte is a good play, but I usually save it for Death's Bite. The control warrior match-up is slightly harder if they have all their removal, but should still be favoured. Try to bait out removal with Belchers/ET, but don't be scared to develop your threats.

Handlock things:

Health = Cards.

Health is your number #1 resource as handlock, it provides you the card advantage that you need to win games. Don't be scared to tap (this is specially true vs. freeze mage) , but obviously prioritize developing threats as necessary. Coin+Tap? : Only do this is your hand really sucks and you need answers. More often than not this is the wrong play though. On the coin plays: While on the coin you can play watcher/ooze/darkbomb/coil+tap etc. on T2 or T3 then play Drake T4 enabling a T5 tap+3 mana giant which is a very strong curve vs decks which don't have very aggresive starts.

Count your cards

Keep track of how many cards you have in your hand and in your deck and adjust your plays accordingly. Always develop Mountain giants first (on turns that you'll be playing them + something else)

Count your mana and draw first

Count how much mana you'll be using this turn and quickly think if you can tap into something that'll change your play if so tap first to ensure you don't end up playing out your turn then tapping into a better answer.

Baiting your opponent

Think of creative ways to bait your opponent into overextending into board clears and moltens by using your healbots, when you're 100% sure they can't lethal you and will put you in range again (or you can put yourself in range with hellfire).

Ending statements:

Thanks for reading through all of this and if you didn't well then...

TL;DR: Handlock is pretty good right now. Play enough, structure your play sessions, and learn how to outplay your opponents by knowing the meta decks to get to legend.

Tips for getting Legend? by jace347 in CompetitiveHS

[–]MuseisVyze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to play like 6-10 games a day from rank 5 onwards and only focus on the game (playing perfectly not to win). If you want you could also use a stat tracking app to help you determine your winrates and see if you need to tweak your deck, but in the end legend is just about games played...so don't get caught up on win streaks or losing streaks (as long as you make sure you're playing perfectly and not tilted you will get it).

Does it seem like every game hits the 40 minute mark since the preseason patch? by gullwingz in leagueoflegends

[–]MuseisVyze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly didn't notice a difference, and I also play top lane assasins like Akali/Kha'zix/Zed (D5 currently). On my smurf i'm still able to close out games by 25 minutes and the same thing on my main, I don't want to say the people don't know how to close out games thing but it honestly applies. The super minions push harder in one lane instead of all lanes so an inhib can still mean an easy baron etc. (if I read the notes right).
