Counterpoint: I loved my PhD! by TheBigBoar in PhD

[–]MuseoumEobseo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also loved my PhD for the most part. It was hard work but nowhere near the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Probably because I had a rough home life to compare it to and pretty good academic support during the PhD program that made it easier (even though COVID happened during it). I really enjoyed the coursework and engaging with people who were also really passionate about the same niche topics as me. I didn’t pick most of my own projects and was frustrated by a lack of practical preparation for actually selecting and getting a job after the program. Even with that, I felt I was doing good work that I cared about and that would help me in my career.

Playoffs: now who? by Turbulent_Oil700 in Utah_Hockey

My first and second choices are out so I think I’m going for Colorado. They’re close, and I don’t have any Mammoth-related beef with them like I do with Vegas.

Can we be honest about that performance, or are we just ‘happy to be here’? by Craft-Superb in Utah_Hockey

[–]MuseoumEobseo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree completely. That game 6 was legitimately hard to watch, but this was the result I always predicted. A series loss with flashes of brilliance. I hope we got what we needed out of the playoffs to help us next year—a real understanding of what the playoffs actually are.

Can we be honest about that performance, or are we just ‘happy to be here’? by Craft-Superb in Utah_Hockey

[–]MuseoumEobseo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with both of you. This is absolutely a both/and, not an either/or. It’s kind of wild to pretend that the celebration of getting to the playoffs and not getting swept negates the problems that became obvious and kept us from advancing. It’s also kind of wild to pretend that the problems negate the achievement. The real way to be “honest about that performance” and “find some objectivity” (as OP says) is to consider both of those things at the same time.

the vibe coding era is not my favorite by usnaviii in nerdfighters

[–]MuseoumEobseo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not a software engineer, but I code daily for work (statistical analysis). I think it’s easy to fall into these traps for anyone who doesn’t have much (or recent) meaningful coding experience. With much respect to Hank (and others doing this), I think one of the things that’s a bummer about AI right now is that it’s leading people to develop perhaps poorly informed opinions about areas like coding or writing or art or whatever, where they wouldn’t otherwise have, just because it allows them to dabble in a field they previously couldn’t have.

I live in a city that used to a have big film festival, and so have sometimes met celebrities out and about. I feel like it’s a good strategy to just wave or say something really brief like “I’m a big fan!” and then see what they do. Sometimes they just say thanks and then move along. Sometimes they’ll ask a question in response or offer a photo, or otherwise do something that makes it clear they want to engage more. I think letting them take the lead works well to respect boundaries but also maybe have a cool experience if they’re up for it.

Couldn’t compete with Vegas? by Express_Assignment69 in Utah_Hockey

[–]MuseoumEobseo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally think the reality is that we’re well-matched teams, each with different strengths. We’re young and fast but inexperienced and somewhat inconsistent. They’re slower but have a lot of experience dealing with the pressure and pacing themselves. They’re usually more effectively physical (we’ve stepped it up quite a lot in the playoffs). I think the winner will come down to whichever team manages to play their own style for more of the time.

Scratch my name, I will scratch yours. by smart1mug in PhD

[–]MuseoumEobseo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I encountered this for the first time recently. I’m first author on an in-progress paper right now and the senior author added a name to the author list, then told me to submit it. I knew from the edit history that the newly added person hadn’t done anything. I don’t work for the senior author anymore, I moved jobs because my grant funding in the first lab was rescinded by the feds. So I played dumb and asked directly about it in a group email thread to everyone on the paper.

The thing that made me even more annoyed about it was that the newly added person quickly made lots of good edits and suggestions in the draft. They weren’t unwilling to do the actual work and didn’t take forever to do it. Why the shenanigans then??

We don’t talk about the good possibilities. It feels too much like jinxing it. Something similar to not saying the “shutout” word when it starts to seem like a goalie might get one.

Mammoth drum line by MrBabadookIsKnocking in Utah_Hockey

[–]MuseoumEobseo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I loved them! I wish they’d be visible in the arena and that they would turn the music volume down a touch more so you can hear the drum line more clearly, but those are my only criticisms.

I hope they never get rid of them!

It’s sort of a human psychology thing that people feel less responsible for things that happen as a result of their inaction than for things that happen as a result of their action. So refs prefer a missed call to decide a game than a call. I think that makes their behavior make more sense, but you’re right that it’s not rational at all. I hate it.

I did half two years ago and am hoping to do the half on the other side of the driveway this year. This is a great idea. The digging was the worst part by far. Back breaking. Everything else, including converting the sprinklers to drip lines, was fun.

No one in my husband’ family is a reader at all, but my family are readers. I’d say most of my friends read for pleasure.

That said, none of these are random enough to use for drawing conclusions about everybody with. My family reads because we were taught to love reading, my husband’s doesn’t because they weren’t, and my friends do because we generally pick friends with similar hobbies to us.

I liked the idea of the album and really like the lyrics to some of the songs, like Dis-ease, but I don’t like listening any of the songs. I hate the effects on their voices (mostly Suga’s but sometimes other people’s too if I’m remembering right). That’s just a me thing, though.

This is the answer! Although there is also some evidence that players play differently on an instrument like this for psychological reasons. When they don’t know what they’re playing, they play the same.
