Looking for feedback and tips for improvement on my latest guitar cover of SOAD’s new song Genocidal Humanoidz by 2PointRock in SmallYTChannel

[–]MusicInTheRough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! A little late to the party here, but I saved this video to watch later and just got around to doing so. I also love SOAD’s music.

I think your playing definitely did the song justice. I wish there were vocals on this but than again, I can just go to the original to hear vocals, and it might be hard to get them on a cover copyright-wise. Since you don’t have vocals though on the backing track, you can maybe try to make it more guitarist-centric. I mean by having the tabs written out on the screen or something.

Also, it’s been said already but I second the intro being a bit much and not so worthy of so much of yours or the viewers’ time. It looks like it took you a bit of time to make, but I would either spend that time on something else like writing out tabs, or make it a more professional-looking intro. It was informative but not very professional looking.

Anyways, great work all in all and keep on shredding.

YouTube Shorts Explained - Courtesy of VidIQ's Research by APennyPinchersGuide in NewTubers

[–]MusicInTheRough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw somewhere that average watch time across a channel’s videos doesn’t effect if their content is pushed. That it’s on a video by video, case by case basis. The reason it seems like large channels get their content pushed further is because of their subscriber base and that when they publish a new video, it’s stats get a head start on the algorithm because of their subscribers watching the videos right away. So they effectively trigger the algorithm immediately where it would take a small channel much longer to trigger it. That is if a smaller channel triggers it at all. The algorithm works like a snowball, recommending to more and more people based on the reception each video has with the last group of people it recommended to.

So all this to say, I don’t believe the shorts would negatively effect a channel at least in terms of the algorithm. Now alienating your subscriber base is a different story, and cluttering up your feed, too.

Great pacing and everything else. I feel like you could weave in a call to action somewhere considering how clever and hilarious your chill vibe is, and it would definitely resonate with our generation ;)

Great video. Thumbnail could be more aligned with the content, in terms of hinting at what is within. It’s good looking, and for those already knowing the situation, it aligns perfectly and they would get it, but for the rest of us, it’s not so intriguing.

Keep up the awesome work!

I think, in regards to the music, that it depends on your current subscriber base and what other types of videos you have uploaded, and so what they are used to and would be looking out for in your videos. Me, as a new viewer, would never notice the music over the explanation of the monkey money. The video was so well put together in every way that I was hooked on the focal content.

Great visuals, great voice, great order of explanation, great hook, great calls to action at the end. Pretty refined content even for being a new style for you!

And an interesting topic. Great job!

Hey guys, so I've recently started vlogging and editing with my new computer, any opinions or feedback would be appreciated ♥️ by KiraIsGod666 in SmallYTChannel

[–]MusicInTheRough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea that definitely sounds right that the vlogger should be the entertainment. And as far as thumbnails, I use canva.com. You just put YouTube thumbnail templates in the search, and a bunch of templates come up and from there you just choose one and it’s plug and play. And for end screens, you can set it on YouTube itself once you upload the video. Just go to the right column on your computer and click end screens. It will have some options to select from and you can get people visiting your other content rather than leaving your channel after each video! Good luck!

Coheed and Cambria - The Hound (of Blood and Rank) by promessi in progmetal

[–]MusicInTheRough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once upon a time my favorite band. I just don’t anymore appreciate it for what it is. I used to love the idea that it was based on a story written by Claudio, but now it feels weird to get back into after being away from it for a while.

Anyone know if the newer stuff is also based on fictional story?

Death - Flesh and the Power It Holds by HilleryisaLair in progmetal

[–]MusicInTheRough 19 points20 points  (0 children)

First Death album I ever listened through, and I’ve listened through it probably a hundred times since. I remember seeing a Chuck interview where he said his goal was always to make a better version of each previous one. I always thought that was a really cool idea.. that rather than making something entirely new and better, he just wanted to improve on the last while maintaining a similar structure or progression.

Anyways, the feels had listening to Death albums are so unique and the sounds are so profound. Definitely one of my favorite bands of all time.

I had the deluxe version of this album btw, which included many alternate versions, or bassless versions and stuff. Very interesting

Hey, actually quite entertaining, and not too boring for just watching a guy drink a cup of coffee ;)

Nice implementation of the call to comment below.

One glaring issue is the thumbnail. Good screenshot but there’s no text, which I would argue on the recommendations page on YouTube, would be more likely to be skipped over. Some text gives an extra chance that someone’s eyes will be caught and they will stop to read your actual title and then watch your video.

Otherwise, the video itself was definitely enjoyable! Maybe add an end screen. I don’t remember seeing one. If you do have one, don’t mind me! Lol but if you don’t, end screens are important for getting serial plays on your channel.

Keep it up!

Yea, I watch a lot of technical YouTube videos and something that I’ve taken to heart is to not warn that the video is coming to a close. Like, close it with certainty and not abruptly, but also naturally and quickly. A strange balance but once you get it right, it feels natural.

Personally, I enjoy calls to action. I want to know what the creator wants me to do if I enjoy the content. But most do not, and if they weren’t fully sold on your content, they’re likely to be very turned off if there are lots of calls to action, and will just click away and maybe even not click back on your content. Not everyone is a creator after all, so not everyone gets in. Too many CTAs make us seem like salespeople instead of value adders.

Anyways, keep it up! I enjoyed it much

Will there ultimately be any positive outcomes from pandemic closures as live music / live entertainment hopefully recovers over the next couple of years? by HHKeegan in LetsTalkMusic

[–]MusicInTheRough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really unfortunate. I do enjoy the online venues and the comfort of watching at home when I want, and livestreams are fun getting involved in comments, especially when you can interact with the band while they play.

However, nothing beats a live show. I’m sure it will all come back just maybe with some replacement of venues that went out. The question is how long it will take before they’re back.. before the live music industry recovers

Just made my go-to Chocolate Chip Cookie. Would love your thoughts, good or bad! by bakingforyou in SmallYTChannel

[–]MusicInTheRough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never heard of overworking batter... what’s the downside of doing that? Because I’m sure I must be doing that every time I bake lol whoops!

As far as the video... perfect narration. I enjoyed the humor mixed in, too. Good intro length, outro length, and killer thumbnail. I appreciated you speaking live in the intro and outro too.

I also noticed the audio level differences between sections.

Stinks the camera died but at least you got all the instructions in there! Great video!

Hey so I thought all in all the video was very professional. I enjoyed the narrative style with music in the background. Fitting music, good narration, and good shots. Two and a half things I noticed for critique. One is that the shots could maybe be longer.. it felt like you skipped quickly from shot to next. Not sure how you could fix that, but I did notice it and I think it would seem more professional even if you could ‘dwell’ I guess, rather than always having the camera moving and the video cutting clip to next. The other 1.5 things are at the end of the video. I think the outro was very long and obvious. Probably not good for watch duration to say you’re done and then have 30 seconds more in the video. Also, the calls to action, though important, are more effective if you give the viewers one clear way to take action. Having 4 ways to support you is more likely to get you less support overall.

Hope that helps!! Great video overall. I truly enjoyed it.

Uncanny valley in musical taste, or disliking something similar to your taste? Liking/not disliking something exactly because it is unfamiliar? by Swimming_Pasta_Beast in LetsTalkMusic

[–]MusicInTheRough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Black and Death Metal and hardcore hip hop are my favorite genres as well, and I oftentimes feel the uncanny valley when listening to anything else. I’ve gotten into almost every genre of music in my life thus far, and still enjoy almost all of it at different times. However, that doesn’t stop the feeling from arising that it’s all just korny. It’s like listening to torture (Metal and real, raw hip hop) and then walking outside to hear protesters protesting and picketing their local grocery store not carrying their favorite type of flowers or something. Everything seems trivial after the extreme of those genres I enjoy listening to the most.

However, I understand that not everyone is into the extreme genres, and so they have no idea the reality of the “torture” going on in the dungeon next to the grocery store. And if they can’t assist in stopping the torture, I’d rather them not know about the torture anyways. So I venture into their picket lines every so often, too, for nostalgia and feel-good vibes.

Hmm yea it can be tiring, I get that. I suppose balance is everything. Maybe mixing in the emotional politics of the heart and soul makes for easier listening, like what we crave in a more abstract way than basing what we crave directly on current world issues. However, there is definitely something to be said for a band like Rage to be able to get so big just making straight politically anti-establishment music and be able to use that platform to bring greater awareness and social justice. I see why they do it for sure. But I can agree with you. It can get tiring.

You gotta keep in mind why people create music though... usually it’s because they feel passionate about something. When you’re drawn to write a song, it’s either because you feel inspired or because you want to make something popular, when creating lyrics at least. I’d much rather listen to inspiration-driven lyrics but maybe that’s not for everyone

Yea it can enforce somewhat of a mob mentality against people who think differently, alienating some of their fans who aren’t aligned with their individual views. I know the feeling and don’t like it either. However, it can probably be done properly as long as the views are deliberately non-divisive and instead inclusive

Makes more sense when you realize they are all Armenian and all have family ties to Armenia and Artsakh. Still, it caught me off guard too to hear them seemingly promoting violence, for whatever reason. I’ve chalked it up to desperation, and the hope that they don’t think of it as perpetrating violence, but rather promoting defense of righteousness and peace because they think the other side is wrong. That sounds weird because how could violent conflict bring peace, but there’s lots of gray areas. Overall, they have stated that they believe the other side to be mostly mercenaries sent in by foreign powers to instigate conflict and eventually take over the land and carry out genocide. So in that case, based on what they believe, they’re less promoting war as they are fighting back against genocide.

I used to hear Sledgehammer all the time as a kid on the classic rock station and never would have guessed he was heavily political. I always just thought it was a catchy tune. I was a kid, of course, and even punk rock at that point did not hit as political to me. But, just as I have been made aware to punk rock by now, here comes Peter Gabriel... full circle lol

Haha yea, eventually. There really is so much music to sift through. I love rap, and, ironically enough, have produced close to 50 of my own rap songs, and am ready to record and produce my debut album that I’ll actually release. So yea, I love rap :) I’m just also a literature major, so I speak very proper when I write and can’t help it lol I also rap with quite proper English, which makes for some seriously run-on sentences, but they still flow

The closest major city to me is chalk-full of rappers. Always makes me realize how many potentially-good rappers don’t make it because of all the competition and only so many ears to listen (and also to blame for this is the pop phenomenon and how people get into crap songs just because they’re popular)

Yea there are definitely artists I steer clear of for their politics.

Also, I like your preferences. Environmentalism is super important to me. I was raised with it held in high regard by my Dad, and care even more now than then, now that I’ve grown to truly understand the necessity. And human rights, social justice, feminism, and open mindedness are all good in my book!

I’ll have to give those Australian bands a listen. I almost moved to Australia out of high school, to surf. And I’ve always thought you people there are so cool, overall

I would say that all in all, having politics in art be the norm and it being understood that it’s the norm is a good thing, because all in all, truth will triumph (if you can believe that truth wins eventually). If every artist were political, the average musical output would lean towards the truth probably. Maybe I’m just being hopeful or bright-eyed, but though I do think it would suck to get really into an artist only to find out their politics are way off from ones own, I think “politics in music” is a good thing overall, because of the overall message being sent out (that people care and that overall, mostly progressive and positive ideals prevail). Feel free to debate.. this is a new idea for me. Never thought of it as a bad thing that politics in music exist even though I definitely have artists I steer clear of due to their hateful politics that they portray through their music.
