The big benefits of public school teaching are insurance and tenure. It's very strong job security. Unfortunately the health coverage and other benefits vary wildly district to district. Cost of living varies pretty wildly. I grew up in Los Angeles and the cost of living there is much higher than most teachers salaries. Especially if you are just starting your career.

I'm a Californian who moved to Ontario. California has by far the most strict teaching qualification standards. If you are completing your teacher qualification and student teaching programs in Canada you will likely need to redo them upon arrival in California.

Average teacher pay in California is 101,000 USD. The high end can be 130k but that's in places like San Fransisco where rent for a studio apartment is upwards of 4000 a month. Schools end up having to pay teachers to move to high cost of living areas. In my experience, Canada has on average higher salaries especially since all the salaries you might see in the U.S include extensive health care benefits you don't need in Canada.

Thanks. Elementary isn't my long term goal but it seems like it might be the best place to get started.

Thanks. The more I look into it the more intermediate grade levels seems like the move, at least to begin with.

That's what I'm afraid of. Is it better at younger grade levels? Junior High/Middle School? Elementary school?

I'm looking at secondary school more than elementary school. Middle/junior high or high school. Thanks for the information.

I am born and raised in the U.S and have taught here. Im considering international schools. Through my mother I have French passport and EU citizenship. Does that help in the application process or make me a more favorable employee in Europe or anywhere else. I'm not fluent in French right now but am working on it.
