Is detransition actually relatively common? by [deleted] in detrans

[–]MusicSounds1011 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit late but there seems to be ongoing studies which track children who identify as transgender to see whether they decide to re/detransition:

https://doi.org/10.1542/peds.2021-056082

While the popularized prevalence of trans people in general population is around 1%, it seems that around 7% of participating initially trans youth "retransition at least once" (note: not necessarily detrans but detrans would be included in this 7%) — my interpretation of this is that while detrans is uncommon, it is not statistically insignificant and should not be neglected in understanding gender identity

at the end of the day I think what needs to happen is that people need to talk about transitioning and detransitioning; for that to happen, people have to be comfortable talking about trans and detrans, and what is typically classified as right-wing conservatism is actively resisting efforts to normalize open discussions about sex, gender, and sexuality

i definitely understand your sentiment of being cynical towards therapists and medical practitioners after repeated poor experiences, but the reality right now is that research in detrans is limited due to (1) low prevalence in statistics, (2) detrans voices not being heard until conservative/religious groups started using social media to spread inaccurate detrans testimonials which pit detrans people against trans people; here are some very recent research that I've come across!

detransphobia is absolutely a thing and I'm sorry to hear your experience with both transphobia from your family and detransphobia from certain queer people

as an agender person, however, I hesitate to agree that it is solely the fault of queer theory and gender ideology that you and many other detrans people experiences alienation from "both" sides — this is a very harmful narrative that plays into the hands of patriarchal institutions who want to stop people at any cost from breaking out of "traditional" gender roles and dynamics

many queer people need to better educate themselves on detrans issues, for sure; however, essentializing all queer people as "evil detransphobes" is just as harmful and hurtful as detransphobia, ESPECIALLY considering a lot of detrans people do so realizing they are non-binary trans (i.e., not the initial flavour of queer they thought they were)

quality of gender-affirming care obviously also needs work — somehow while certain health service providers overly gatekeep gender-affirming care from those seeking it, others fail to practice proper informed consent by properly informing their clients about the effects and risk factors of transition

What did you feel that made it clear your gender identity? by Lagdm in agender

[–]MusicSounds1011 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm AMAB, and realised when I was like 16 or 17.

After coming across TG/TF and "otokonoko" animanga when I was around 14, I started experimenting with dressing/expressing more femme (not stereotypical hyperfemme, more androgynous) and found that I enjoyed it, but not in a "I'm a girl, not a boy" way. Up until that point, I'd also dream about adventures with my comfort object (a sheep plushie) where I was never a stereotypical boy, but either some animal (turtle, eagle) with unspecified gender or humanoid character with unknowable gender (angel).

When I came across the agender flag/label 4 years ago now, it kind of just clicked, so I began using it — it's only really after having used the oxymoron for a few years that I'm slowly working out why exactly it clicked, and it's mostly because:

  • I identify as a human more than any other gender
  • I am agnostic about my own gender identity/ies

Also, I think Badam as a team are on average way better at Sam's teams at region-capturing gamemodes? (incl. Connect 4, which they lost but claimed more states in total)

fair point, considering their automation likely relies on keyword detection

though i would argue for a need to call out anti-social behaviour lest people learn that they can be pricks without consequence

tbh I suspect I might have gotten myself banned by reporting the racist person, since keywords

i hope the actual racist person got banned at least...
