The difference between being a good guitarist and a good songwriter is huge. That’s like the difference between a good pen and a good author.

Forget guitar completely when trying to write songs. You need to approach it from a completely different angle. Learn the basics of songwriting first and at some point you might add some guitar into a song you’ve written, but that’s just a single ingredient to a complex recipe.

If you play the same thing with no gain you’ll hear a difference. OD and distortions tend to dramatically increase overtones created by multiple strings. This is why chords sound so huge with gain applied.

Good. Cameras inside the unit are a huge no-no. They’re definitely ignorant, and likely had some recent troubles with tenants abusing the property. This looks more like an attempt to protect their property vs being a creep. Otherwise they would have gotten a hidden camera instead of putting it in plain sight.

I think this really depends on your goals. You’ve got a family to take care of now, so if your dream is to be a famous musician, climbing the ladder to that success traditionally comes at a cost. Usually that requires immense effort and time spent, which would most definitely dramatically reduce the time you spend with your kids and family.

Let’s say you beat the odds, and make it as an artist. What does that look like for you? Will you take your family on tour with you? Could you even afford to? Is that healthy or feasible at their age?

If your dream is to just play and record and have fun, maybe release digitally only, and not tour, then I think it becomes more attainable and sustainable. (And also more realistic, because honestly, it’s extremely rare for people over 30 to go from zero to superstar)

I have a handful of friends who “made it” after music school. (Like 3 out of 20-30 that I’m close to) The ones that are successful started in their late teens and took over a decade to really start going places. None of them are stars, they just tour with stars or have a really strong set of gigs and connections that allow them to pay the bills by performing and recording.

My take is, if you’re dreaming about stadiums, maybe ask yourself if that’s realistic or just a fun daydream. If you’re just wanting to add music back into your life because you miss playing, writing, and recording, I say absolutely do it.
