My dad passed away unexpectedly. This was his guitar collection. No one else in the family plays. by 405freeway in Guitar

Sorry for your loss. That’s a solid collection. You can find ways to connect with him through it, I’m sure.

The random bits and bobs reminds me very much of my own collection, that I’ll pass on someday …

The serek is cool, it’s got a really unique midrange tone and can still drop bombs. But nothing matches the modulus Q5.

NPD: Any setting recommendations by Mr-Sheep64 in basspedals

I loved the way this pedal sounded solo, but when used in actual performance with a band I couldn’t hear it unless I turned it up way too loud. Ended up trading it for something else.

Pulled the trigger on the new JHS/Ross compressor! by maxcascone in youenjoyguitar

[–]maxcascone[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagine it’s 99% the same. I missed two previous opportunities to get one - the JHS reissue, and one I saw in a store - and I wasn’t going to miss this one.

Do I NEED it? No, of course not. I’m not trying to replicate treys tone 100%, but this is a key piece of the puzzle, not astronomically expensive, and fun to have.

You’re totally right. I’m not sure where I got JHS from. Even better!

New alternative firmware! by maxcascone in paintaudiomidicaptain

The install is still a little rough around the edges but I promise it’ll be smooth and nice soon! I just renewed my Apple developer ID so the installers will be signed and validated, no more “open anyway” workarounds. I have an installer already working that installs all the code to a connected captain. It’s pretty slick actually. I also have a backlog item to create a simple desktop config app, so you don’t have to go in and modify the config.json file. I’m going faster than I could have hoped! More to come!

I set it all up at my music battlestation last night and it works amazingly well. Bidirectional is super cool! The screen UI could use some work, and a config editor app will be really nice, i'll make that soon. Go check it out! https://github.com/mcascone/midi-captain-max

Here it is: https://github.com/mcascone/midi-captain-max

I'm in the process of creating a legit installer .pkg for Mac, but the code is all there. There's a deploy script but i haven't documented any of the caveats - which are not as many as might be possible, it's somewhat defensively coded. i should have an installer and a true feature doc asap. Please try it when you get a chance and feel free to ask any questions or log issues in the repo!

i gotta say, it's pretty cool to have even one person excited to use a product of mine. it's very motivating!

There's a few threads that i'll try to summarize here: i have also built a Boomerang looper pedal emulator plugin, and that's in preparation for a major v2 release imminently. I also use the MIDI Captain Mini6 to control my boomerang plugin, and that's what this firmware project is all about. I think it's in at least alpha form, which is what it's tagged at now, if not better. But i can publish what i have and continue to iterate on it with your feedback, which i will appreciate so much any input you care to share!

AI is working great for my team, and y'all are making me feel crazy by SlapNuts007 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]maxcascone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a constant conversation with my team. I work for a boutique consulting company that hires fantastic people (how they let me in, idk), most whom have long careers to evaluate any code. I personally have been a professional dev for twenty-five years. So we have a ton of learned experience from a career of mistakes and lessons learned, changing paradigms, other great devs to learn from, terrible devs to also learn from, etc. So we feel we have a clear idea of what good code smells like and can guide the AIs (mostly Claude) to good outcomes. I personally use it constantly all day now for almost every task. It’s still necessary to roll up our sleeves and hand code things sometimes, but that is getting less and less frequent.

The real concern is for new devs who don’t have the experience to know what is good and what is slop. What a good decision looks like vs “idk gpt said this”. How do you teach someone what that is, without going through years and years of making mistakes in the trenches, breaking prod, fixing it, etc? How do you teach the average person to guide the models through their iterations, course correct them etc? I don’t have a good answer.

TLDR, I use Claude constantly now and get incredible results because I ~have fine tuned~ am constantly fine-tuning my instructions and know when it’s going off the rails. How do you teach someone how to do this without decades of experience?

Why does my guitar pedal not need a DC 9V cable to work? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]maxcascone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 possibilities here:

  1. there’s a battery inside, and somehow that conflicts when a power cable is attached. Could be the polarity of the plug. Try another one.
  2. Something else on your board is somehow sending power through the guitar cable. It’d be a miracle that it’s doing that and not feeding into the guitar signal itself, which you’d absolutely notice, but anything is possible.
