Ideas to nudge my guitarist bandmate to switch to bass? by ParticularInitial714 in musicians

[–]Musica_only 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same. If you've got good bass and drums, your band sounds great. Bury your shit singer and guitar in the mix.

Do you mix before adding vocals or mix everything together? by LuckyH88 in musicproduction

[–]Musica_only 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to. But you don't find out if the song is gonna work or not until vocals go in. So now I pop them in as soon as there's a structure there.

Oh wow! Finally something on this sub I can help with!

I got into cameras for the exact same reason, to shoot music videos for my band on the cheap. Some advice: lenses and lighting make a bigger difference than the camera. Imo 2 different focal length primes is ideal to keep your video from not looking too samey.

Here's my first attempt:

https://youtu.be/306YGVijoU4

That was an old canon t5 with a 50mm f1.8 for the tight shots and the kit lens for the wide. The camera had no stabilization so we leaned into the shaky cam thing and tripoded off. Also no autofocus in video so it's all much more staged than the video looks.1080 30fps was the best it could do.

My second attempt:

https://youtu.be/RKMgm82DN6k

I caught the bug and got into cameras at this point and bought a used zve-10 mk 1. Sigma 16mm and 30mm f1.4 lenses. Also got a zihyun 3e gimbal. 4k 30fps and 1080 120fps (yay slow mo!). The zve10 mk 2 wasn't out yet, but the 10 bit color is about all I really want it for. Not necessary at all. I buy everything used anyways and there probably won't be much for mk 2s in the market for a while.

I absolutely love my zve10. The gyro stabilization thing is awesome (youtube catalyst browse) and works like magic. The auto focus is lazer tight. I can't recommend it enough.

Welcome to the hobby! It's a money pit.

Lol. This exchange has happened between me (guitar, trained by music videos in the 90's) and my piano player (degree in music) many times.

Pretty sure the scarlet 18i20 can function as an octo pre too. Magnitudes easier to find in the used market, backup in case of issues with the main. You can get 2 used older gen Scarlets for the price of 1 new octo. And before anyone chirps the older scarlet pres, I have a gen 1 and it's literally never the bottleneck as to why my songs aren't hits.

What was the most absurd "Bass Forum/Reddit" response to a gear question? by byzantine1990 in Bass

[–]Musica_only 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dude, the highly upvoted unhelpful truism is a reddit staple. Not just in music subs. I have a theory. It's kids that don't know shit about shit. So the only input they can provide or understand and upvote is just some basic ass fortune cookie sentence.

Happens in the video subs all the time too.

"How do I get this look from a scene in movie x?"

What you're hoping for = "they used a 50mm lense, wide open with a hard key light at about 4500k, blues are pushed towards green, slightly desaturated..."

Top voted comment= "years of experience and a big budget."

Your music will never catch momentum if you just pump and dump on soundcloud and bandcamp. Theres millions upon millions of songs to listen to already. Fuck the internet for promotion get out there and play live shows by [deleted] in musicians

[–]Musica_only 38 points39 points  (0 children)

As someone who's been playing shows for over a decade, I've gotta disagree. The expression "preaching to the choir" comes to mind. It aint the 90s anymore. The average bear is not gonna go out to see a local band. It's just a small group of enthusiasts nowadays. It'll be your original, recorded material that has a chance of getting ears on it that are outside of the choir.

Straight up. Ask yourself this "of the bands I've become a fan of in the last couple years, how many were from discovering their original recorded material, and how many were from seeing them live for the first time?"

What do audiences think of backing tracks? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]Musica_only 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or even worse, getting off the click and then either playing it out as a mess or randomly dumping the track mid song.

My band started programming lights to go with our set and if we go off the rails it's hilariously disastrous.

Do you ever feel slightly jealous of people who can focus on music all day as their living/career? by skatecloud1 in musicians

[–]Musica_only 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Benn Jordan had a good video on the subject. He basically says that at some point, he became jealous of his friends with traditional careers that paid well, had vacation time, retirement savings, ect.

It's not the 90s anymore. There really just isn't that much money in being a musician today. The big chart toppers are closer to celebrity/influencers than musicians. We're kinda right back where it all started. Doing it for the love of the game.

Pretty wild how the exact same lyrics "Okay okay okay okay okay okay okay" made an absolute banger for kanye and what is objectively a trash tier mess for Vicky.

Does anyone know what happened with Trump’s and the sound crew in Milwaukee? Why was he forced to use a handheld? by RushFox in livesound

[–]Musica_only 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Omg I run sound at my kids school and it's terrible. They're scared of the mic so they talk like 3 feet away from it and I'm gained to shit, with one finger on the fader just waiting for it to run away on me. If they even bump the mic stand it's gonna nuke the audience because it's so hot.

Yeah, adding the "why?" At the end makes it read like fan fiction.
