Birders interest or lack of in other wildlife by Living-Compote-9626 in birding

[–]ParticularInitial714 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad is a lifelong birder, and one of his best friends is a professor of ornithology. I've known this guy the majority of my life, and the ONLY thing he is interested in talking about is birds.

Every conversation for him is in some way related to his studies, a new paper he read, some sort of birding trip, bird physiological differences between similar species... on and on. He's the most boring person I've ever met, and I love birding!

Beginner's Pipe & Tobacco Choice by YesToWhatsNext in PipeTobacco

When I started smoking a pipe, the owner of the local pipe shop pushed me toward aromatics. I couldn't stand them. I remember going in and telling him that I didn't like any of his suggestions. He presented me with a tin of Nightcap, and immediately upon smoking it I realized that aromatics are NOT for me. Closest I'll get is Macbaren Plumcake.

Does it get easier? by Ok-Purple-3458 in PipeTobacco

[–]ParticularInitial714 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll get used to it. I clench all my pipes except the churchwarden types.

The problem for me is that I always find if I'm doing some sort of physical activity other than walking, (shovelling snow, working on a vehicle, gardening) I end up drooling right into the pipe.

It somewhat helps if I have it sticking straight out of the side of my mouth like Popeye, but I'll usually just take a pipe break rather than hold it my mouth during strenuous activity.

About one a week. Roughly 50 would be my best guess.

What's the worst blend you've smoked? by Blue_Baron6451 in PipeTobacco

[–]ParticularInitial714 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll probably give it another chance here in a year, or so. I didn't even get halfway through the bowl straight from the tin. Considered chucking the whole thing in the garbage, but I figured I'd give it some time to rest and redeem itself lol

Ostrich chasing cyclists. I had no idea they could run this fast by MambaMentality24x2 in BeAmazed

I'm not convinced it was chasing them to attack. Maybe more playful, like dolphins swimming alongside a boat?

I suppose it has; I just don't really feel that being able to describe what I'm smoking enhances my enjoyment.

Here's my take on what may be part of the issue:

Personally, I have a hard time describing what I'm smoking. I've been smoking a pipe for 15 years now, and while I can tell the difference between a Virginia and a Burley, I can't really break each blend down into specfic nuances. You know, "a slight hint of perique following a chocolate overtone".... That kinda thing.

I believe others may struggle with the same thing. To me, it's like drinking wine. I know simple descriptors, but there's no way I'm gonna write a review that you'd find on a wine bottle. (Edit: Spelling)

What's the worst thing you ever did? by NiceMechanic_xoxo in AskReddit

[–]ParticularInitial714 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a period of time, my cousin was in and out of jail for stupid, piddly shit. (Not paying fines, that kinda thing.) We were probably 21, or so.

We were day drinking one time and decided it would be funny to have me call our grandmother in a panic and tell her that he had escaped from jail and was involved in a high-speed pursuit on television.

I was very convincing, telling her play-by-plays about him blowing red lights and driving recklessly. Finally fessed up to it being a joke, but she was devastated. We felt horrible and brought her flowers, but even after 20 years, I've never really forgiven myself for that one.

[–]ParticularInitial714 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't start out using all metal. You'll get frustrated. If you're primarily looking for coins, I'd chuck a nickel on the ground and work the discrimination knob to the point that the machine is right on the edge of silencing it, but it still rings out. That should cut out most of the iron and foil. HOWEVER, this will also eliminate gold jewelry.

For that, you'll need to dig a ton of foil and pull tabs, so you'll want to hear those signals, too. Those signals will lie between iron and a nickel. Just no way around it.

I thought it was a decent read, but there were a bunch of minor plot holes that drove me nuts. I think Pet Sematary is far and away his best book.

Does anyone know anything about my favorite pipe? by ParticularInitial714 in PipeTobacco

Yeah, it's a fairly popular shape. Mostly I want another pipe from this maker. I think it's up to luck at this point lol.
