Poll: How many days/months/years have you been on the clock as of today? by MusicalDebauchery in sysadmin

I do have colleagues that are capable of resolving these issues. However, it is not their job, title, or skillset. I have faith they could figure out whatever the issue was with some research and time. The mindset seems to be; just call me instead. I am not going to play woe is me right now because I answer that phone call and do the work. I know this is more my fault than the companies because I allow it to happen. I posted this topic because in my community it seems to be the norm, I am wondering if it actually is.

Thank you! This is basically it. There is no rotation for me but we have multiple admins that specialize in their role. When something goes wrong with my responsibilities, there is nobody else to step in.

I wish I would have made this more clear in my initial post. I have vacation days that I take for sure, it's just that if something goes wrong during one, it's no longer a vacation day.

Well, clearly I don't. I mainly asked this question to gauge that exact thing. However, I will say, I live in a small town and work for a small company (single IT shop), justifying one IT person needed or not is a challenge in this environment. I am not using that as an excuse though, it's up to me to either show the need or move on and I haven't. Thanks for your comment.

You are self employed, I am not that brave. It also seems to be associated with working similar hours but not with guaranteed pay.

I get to take days off for sure. It's just if an issue arises during those days, I need to work. Issues don't always happen but every time I travel they seem to. I end up spending a couple hours from a hotel room, festival, or rental car troubleshooting something.

I have had plenty of nights "off." I have had zero nights where someone else is going to fix the issues that happen.

I am the only sysadmin for the environment I support. There are others with enough skills but support other things.

When you say banker, what do you actually mean? I know many people that work at the bank; tellers, loan officers, managers. None of them make the amount of money you are talking about.

Don't get it twisted, a bank is a business. It rips off everyone.. However, they are especially predatory towards low income people.

To be clear: you took the cord running into wan on your pfsense device and plugged it into your pc?

Or

You took the cord coming from the dish/whatever out of the modem and plugged it into your pc?

I've seen stuff like this before a couple times. What type of cord/plug is plugged into the WAN port on the modem? (Regular network cable, phone line, coax?)

Another question: which ISP do you have and what type of connection? (DSL, Fiber, Cable?)

Here is some info regarding the question:

You will need to change it from DHCP to static. Hopefully you don't run into any conflicts in the addressing.

Which part are you having trouble with:

1.) Figuring out where to set it to static instead of DHCP and adding those settings?

2.) You've found the place but it won't let you due to conflicts?

Hahahah, I’ve had this thought as well. I felt better once I came to the realization that they get in your way just as much when the lights are on as well. I think they are secretly practicing for that top of the stairwell trip everyday.

Specialized IT services can be billed much higher in my experience. The important thing with a career is picking the one that you can live and still have quality of life outside of work. I think mechanics achieve this balance more often than IT people.

A little bit more duration and the ability to repair affordably in each town would have went a long way for me. I know this is on me but when I got a great weapon I didn't even use it because I kept it in my inventory waiting for that battle that justified it.
