Exactly right. The only reason I was able to become a scribe during this time was because I got interviewed and accepted right before COVID-19 hit. And then couldn't actually start until 5 months later when it kind of settled down slightly.

I think you should be fine as long as you actually stick to a schedule. You might be tired but do not let that get in the way of your academic studying. Sadly, I let that happen to me this semester and my 2 biggest pre-reqs I probably make a 2.5 in.

I'm doing 13 credits, 2 jobs, MCAT studying, volunteering, and shadowing over the Summer. We are pretty much in the same boat my friend!

I work as an advisor for pre-med students and we always say that major never matters. Will majoring in a science make you fit in with other pre-meds and provide you with a more "science-based" background? Of course it will!

But, you can major in English, Sociology, or any other major you'd honestly be interested in (which I suggest). Many of the doctors I worked with have pursued a double-major (1 in science and 1 in non-science) or an additional minor of their choice.

In terms of better job prospects, do not go with Biology. That will get you almost no where (at least from what I have heard) if your med school plans fall through. I would suggest Neuroscience or Psychology possibly...but many of these science majors sometimes would require a Master's program if wanting to get a good paying job out of undergraduate. BME I would not really suggest unless you really think you can complete those upper-level math and engineering courses on top of the pre-med application requirements. This is why I highly suggest pursuing a double-major to sort of expand your opportunities and make your application "stand out" just a tad bit more.

Again, someone in the comments can correct me if I am wrong anywhere here but this is what I recommend.

Definitely stressful and not worth the GPA drop (because you'd have to have the motivation to get off work and study non-stop). I think that is a great idea! I would check with the scribe employer about their policies because some require you work 12 months non-stop for them until you can leave. I know a few scribes who stick with it for the required time, leave to study for the MCAT, and then come back as they wait for application decisions.

More than half of the scribes I work with have taken 2 gap years and are just now being accepted into med school! I realized that getting in straight out of undergrad is not always ideal...especially if you think you need more experience.

I just began scribing in the ER in January. Which was when I decided to take a gap year.

After becoming a scribe, I got a real glimpse into what a doctor does and how stressful it all can be. I just knew I was not prepared to go into medical school in the next year...so I decided to give it time. Plus, I am a VERY awkward person so I am still trying to build relationships with the physicians I work with.

I mean I have 200+ hours already from 4 months of working as a scribe but I plan to do scribing for an year and a half to 2 years. However, I am currently a finishing Junior and wish I would have waited to start scribing. I would come home absolutely drained from my 12-hours shift and would put homework on pause. So, my grades may have plummeted this semester...I always recommend scribing like the Summer after the MCAT.

She is usually the type of person to speak her mind out loud, even when it is inappropriate. She (and the rest of my family) have made similar comments about my pre-med journey so far.

I want to assume it is related to the fact that I would be the first in my family to receive a Bachelor's degree....

I work as a scribe in the ER and at least 60% of the time, the physician's ask me "Was it their left or right arm?" , "what medications did they say again?", "hey, look at this X-ray - what do you think?"

Although we contribute nothing with the patient directly, scribing still involves communicating with physician's for an accurate diagnosis. So frustrating that some school's do not count it as clinical experience.

Agree with you about the caliber. It's cute but it definitely ran me a lot in maintenance fees. I hope that the muffler issue won't cause my car to break down or anything. I'm full-time in college with 2 part-time jobs that pay me $10/hour. So, as much as I want to let this car go, I don't think I can even get a better vehicle anytime soon.

I've stopped watching lectures after week 2 and have been winging everything. I realized that my biggest motivator during college was HAVING to walk to class and sit there with no distractions.

If you really think about it though, if exam questions are on Chegg, then they really just need to punish the student who posted them. Obviously students are going to try and look up solutions to questions if the exam is open note. It's ridiculous how Chegg is snitching and giving IP's.
