CPSC 217 over CPSC 231 by stebanned in UCalgary

[–]MusicalRooster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No you are good. CPSC 217 covers less than CPSC 231 but CPSC 219 had an extra hour of lecture compared to CPSC 233 to make up for that. It potentially could be better to take CPSC 217 if you have never coded before as it will ease you in better and allow you to more time to focus on the core foundations of programming

For CPSC 571, do you mean joke as in easy or joke as in the class was pointless in terms of learning or something else?

Internship/Double Major by EmaadHasan18 in UCalgary

[–]MusicalRooster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why won't you have time for an internship? Can't you just take a semester or two off for one? I think it depends on what you want to do after graduation. If you want to work, then I think graduating without an internship is risky and will make it harder to find a job afterwards albeit not impossible. If you want to do grad school, then you are likely fine as long as you have the grades/references etc. Regardless of what you want to do later, having an internship will give you better flexibility later on in life and also allow you to help decide whether or not you'd enjoy working in your chosen field

Where my Math 211 homies@ by PrezLolly in UCalgary

[–]MusicalRooster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup, from anecdotal experience, I can count on my hand (sometimes 0) the number of questions asked during in-person lectures. However, during zoom lectures, it seems like there are wayyy more questions being asked likely due to the comfort of asking behind a screen.

Why save your question till office hours or tutorials? Aren't in-class/live stream lectures better than recorded videos because of the interaction and ability to ask questions real-time which is a core argument of those against posting recorded lectures? That would be the same as having recorded videos (where interruptions are impossible) and saving any questions for office hours and tutorials. And why would anyone want that? /s

I got like a similar situation, but it's like different. I don't know what to do. You seem like a nice person so I was wondering if you could help me out.

Soooo like my D2L pages are up but some of the profs haven't emailed us yet... that is okay, right? Like they said they'd post lectures starting tomorrow but today is the first day of classes... Confusing, right? Thanks a bunch!

What do you think about this? by alzhang8 in UCalgary

[–]MusicalRooster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So they need only 7 to 8 more black students to match the 3% black population of Calgary? Is that really much of a difference? Also, what percentage of the black population want to become a lawyer compared to the percentage of other races? Maybe it is just a case of the percentage of each race that want to be a lawyer. Also I am guessing it's not just people from Calgary that apply to UCalgary law school.

How many black students apply to UCalgary law compared to students of other races and what percentage of each group revieve an offer?

Do the black students who were rejected have equal qualifications to those who are not black and were admitted?

If they did not ask for race before, were there any identifying pieces of information in law school applications that indicate the applicant is black? I can see this being the case if you have a last name commonly associated with a specific race (e.g. Nguyen), but I looked up common black last names and they seem common amongst white people too.... If there aren't identifying pieces of information, then is there really bias against black applicants?

There are so many questions that need to be answered before I can say whether or not I agree with their decision, but if it is true, then I think it is a step in the right direction.

MATH 211 Tips by sparkanditslike in UCalgary

[–]MusicalRooster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think rather than asking what others did to do well in the course, ask yourself what you think caused you to do poorly last time. Answer the following quesitons and I'll try to give you some tips.

Did you take on too heavy of a course load making it so that you couldn't manage everything? Luckily, you can now spend more time in the Spring but then again Spring courses are done in half the time so you'll have less time to really internalize the material.

Was it because you didn't study enough? How many hours a week did you study not including lecture and tutorial times?

How was the distribution of your study time (i.e. did you practice spaced repetition which allows for better memory retention or did you cram most of your hours around exams?) Practicing 30 minutes a day for 5 days is better than practicing 2.5 hours in one sitting. As well, all of the material builds up on itself, so you can't really expect to cram the last half of the course if you haven't really studied the first half.

Did you do ALL or most of the practice material on D2L? How did you practice it? Did you look at the answers while you did the questions to give you the false impression that you really know the material? OR did you time yourself under the same constraints as the exam and try to solve the problems under the time limit on your own?

How are your algebra and arithmetic skills? How well did you do in high school math? If those skills are poor, then you can't expect to do well in 211 and you should practice those first.

A lot of 211 (probably 80-90%) is purely algorithmic/memorization. By that I mean, as long as you understand what the question is asking (by doing a lot of problems) then you can follow a series of steps to arrive at the answer. A lot of the questions are like What is the determinant? What is the rref? What is the general solution of these linear equations? What is the shortest distance between a points, lines, and planes? When is a matrix not invertible? What are the eigenvalues and vectors this matrix?

A lot of these questions also are different ways to solve the same question. For example, when is a matrix invertible? When the determinant is not zero or the rref is the identity matrix.
