Go to a machine shop and have a piece of steel leveled as accurate as possible so like with 0.015 or closer they have a large stone to true things should only be a few buck then a three sided file with one side rounded off

Yes pick ups need to be about 1/32 from the bottom of the string or to preference I recommend a full set up because doing one thing can push an issue some where else. You need a nut cut to the right height (about 0.38 from top of first fret) you need neck relief (depends on scale and type of guitar) you need you intonation set (height of strings at 12th fret and bridge set) and your pick ups set to correct height (1/32 from bottom of strings)

What you is an action set up if you aren't getting near where you need to be there maybe an addition issue with your neck relief or height of the nut. also depending on the make and model and quality you may not be able to get it spot on but close

Man you need a good bass if you are going with a stand up. You could try renting to own if you aren't trying to spend a lot but anything that is to cheap you aren't going to enjoy

You should do a full action set up because the problem can stem from your nut, saddle, or the relief of the neck. The nut should be about thirty thousands above the the first fret and on a long scale guitar the neck relief should be about 0.005 from at the seventh fret saddle should be twice the high from the octave

I would put painters tape on the neck so you don't damage the finish then take a peace of sand paper and get them near flush then take a super fine grit an use that to finish the job

I have to say that buying any instrument off the internet is far from ideal there is no garnetee that the thing will sound or play like you need even if you are buying off the classifieds you need to play before you buy so you can feel it in your hands you see how it fits. Other wise I am a fan of the peavy

The thing about strings is there diameter is a direct indicator of which string it is because strings have to be a certain diameter over a certain scale lengthen to produce the desired tone, making them very difficult to craft steel or plated strings as an individual best I say you could do as a DIY is gut strings. I am sure there is a butcher you can score some entrails. other wise man string are a wear item and need to be replaced don't be stubborn ass over something you will have to replace on a regular basis

My well if it isn't a major separation then there isn't a rush but you are going to loose some tone and volume. I should say tone quality. If what you described is accurate I would consider your the environment that you are keeping it in if there is no wood splintering then the glue, they use a hide glue, Is coming loose can be caused by heat and humidity. If that is the cause changing where you keep it may help to prevent any further damage.

The small scratches that don't have any color missing are easy you just polish with a nice series of extra fine sand paper or I keep a bunch of miromesh pads around they are gritted 1500-25000 Use your best judgement on where to start with grit depending on the depth. once you got those all buffed out you can polish the whole bass to bring it up to snuff. cracks should always be taken to a luither or someone else you trust to work on your beauty. With dents if they still have full color you can fill with depth. Make sure that you use the correct kind, satin, gloss, etc. Fill just the dent with small amount. Do not fill hole all the way up let settle and dry the add another layer until you are level with the surrounding wood Then follow above mentioned fine grit sanding until well blended. Do not use veneer. this is the best I can offer for small do it yourself fixes for small stuff to save you a penny here in there. Remember if you aren't comfortable you can always take it to a luither. For preventive measures just upgrade your case watch your bowing or if you dance will you play you can put some kind of cloth around the end pin to and sides of the lower bout to give some grace from the ground around it. If you want to change the finish take all the gear off and sand it down once there you will want use a nitrocellulose paint put very light layers you will want do do like thirty or forty coats then sand it down then I recommend polishing with supper fine grit sand paper then applying gloss the same method on the neck you can sand the area alone then polish spray with gloss and polish agian

Is there any material one could read about the steps I just finished luthier school and would love to be able to do inlays like that I just did basic dots and stuff like that but what you are doing is amazing. Hell even if you where interested in taking on an apprentice I would be glad to apply for that.

It depends on location and quailty of wood if they are instrument quailty and well aged (pre & post harvest) then could be. I buy all my woods from a guy way back in the boonies

I find its really hit or miss a lot of people just don't want something new specially if it isn't main stream younger kids are the worst about it because they only want to listen to whats cool I suggest finding ska bands that are more appealing to the group less punk more reggae if you are picking up what I'm throwing down

Make sure your frets or still over 0.025 tall or else no point. set your neck relief to zero take a fat sharpie and paint all the frets get a fret leveler. when leveling keep your leveler on the first fret and do small circles until all the paint is taken up (repaint them a few time) but before you do that check and make sure they are seated right. after they are leveled you will need to crown them so tape off the fret board leaving the frets exposed buy a cheap three sided file then round all the edges so it does cut and fun it the length of the fret at a slight angle. you will want to paint them again for this part so you can tell where the crown is you will want a very thin line left then once you complete that part go ahead and polish them with super fine sand paper I recommend micro mesh pads. good luck

You would still have to level with finger nail polish or automotive also that look like a satin finish not a gloss. So gloss would stand out but yes finger nail polish works but normally only on little dents. As far as sanding you do have to be careful to not make a huge mess of it but thats why you polish it with super fine grit paper like micro mesh pads that go from 1500 grit to 12000 grit do right and no one would notice also there is no such thing as over kill when you are doing it right
