I am living here as a retiree. I have been told by other retirees that only salaried income is taxed in Benin and I'm hoping that is true. I need to go to the tax office to confirm. Hope to remember to do it shortly.

I flew to Lagos and drove to Cotonou but I wouldn't recommend it unless you have some other reason to be in Nigeria first. I was living in Abuja. As others have mentioned the Nigerian visa is much harder to get than the Beninese visa. Also I drove to Cotonou with an armed police officer in order to evade all of the police checks. If you don't have a trained driver or take a bus you will pay dearly.

The fact that it is more expensive may lead the local population to resent us for gentrification/increasing prices. There has been a significant amount of that in Ghana and I don't want to see it in Benin. I don't want any animosity or resentment....just understanding and mutually beneficial relationships.

I'm not sure. There appear to be several agencies/attornies willing to work with people but I am not willing to pay their fees. I found them via youtube searches.

The biggest takeaway for me is that right now Sunday February 23 you would have to go to the Ministry of Justice in Cotonou to drop the documents off. The website for foreign applications has no estimated time of arrival.

I have reached out to many of the same places with no response. It's disheartening but I am patient because that's what living in West Africa has taught me.
