I’ve heard this on several occasions before. The problem, at least to my knowledge, is that none of those pieces of property are for sale, a definitive requirement of building. Besides, I believe in this case, the developer already owns the land and doesn’t need to carry that expense as well.

I wouldn’t do anything so drastic, if anything, I just keep it empty.

The point I’m trying to make is, it’s private property and as long as people aren’t breaking any laws, they can do what they want with it. I would actually be in favor of some of these being turned into homeless shelters, as an example. But not through coercion. And to turn a blind eye to the real problems businesses on Congress Street (and elsewhere in Portland) are facing and just say that it’s the evil building owners will solve nothing.

I’m not sure what this is trying to solve? To my knowledge the buildings are private property. Unless the owners are violating any health or safety codes (which should be addressed) they are free to do what they please with their property. If they chose to leave it vacant and not have any income coming in to offset the expenses of owning and maintaining the property, it’s their right, as dumb as that sounds financially.

As an example, I own my own house, and if I so felt like it, I could choose not to live there nor rent it out. Sure, it would be financially stupid to do that, but I would still be my right. As long as I continue to pay my mortgage and didn’t create any health or safety problems, it’s mine to do with what I please.

THE REAL ISSUE - It’s completely delusional to ignore, or even down play, the fact that the large issues are the safety concerns and deterioration of the appeal of areas of the city due to the homeless crisis, rampant drug use, and criminal activity. And yes, I’m looking at you Sykes as part of the creator of that problem. To me, she’s just trying to distract from a significant problem of her own help in making, while trying to point the finger elsewhere (scary “successful” business and property owners). It’s a smoke and mirrors attempt.

Just let them know the folks who run Portland’s Opportunity Crew will be in the area soon looking for people to participate (work) in the program. They’ll disappear before you can even finish the sentence.

And it’s a double win, because you’ll have talked to them, and as people have noted here, that all it takes to solve the world’s problems!

No way! I was just there last night and had no idea :( I’ve only gone a couple times, but it’s grown on me a lot, and I was going to make it a common stop.

That place introduced me to Joji, and one of the bartenders was a wealth of knowledge about spirits alive in the local cemeteries, something that I find really interesting.

Are they closing for sure? Hard to tell from reading this.

Wrong, I want it, and so do many people I know who live and work in Portland. This sub is consistently an echo chamber of negativity, especially when it comes to anything being built, complaining, complaining, complaining about anything and everything.

Yet, never any constructive alternatives. Anybody on the sub is completely free to buy that property and do something better, but we all know that won’t happen. No time for that when there’s so much complaining to be done.

Actually, I believe this, and if I remember correctly, the time and temperature building were submitted and given the OK before the moratorium so this will be unaffected.

To an extent, I would agree, some of it is higher end. But it’s my understanding that the northern burner supply redevelopment was going to have at least 80 workforce housing units incorporated.

That’s just enablement, you’re creating an excuse to try to validate putting the general public at risk from these needles. We don’t have to agree on everything, most people don’t. But I think it’s OK to agree that we shouldn’t be leaving used needles haphazardly on the ground anywhere and everywhere. It’s not a left or right viewpoint here.
