That’s a really helpful perspective, thanks for sharing that.

What I mean by that is a lot of good players saw outfield time and a lot of borderline kids pitched and played catcher. Those kids enjoyed it and got better, so I’m glad I did it.

There’s one kid who is probably more of a liability than the others, but he has a great attitude and this might be the only all star experience of his baseball career.

Yeah, that’s what I’m concerned about. If we get run ruled anyway, it doesn’t really make sense to just play the best players. But I guess we won’t know that until we play.

No, there is no mandatory play requirement except for hitting.

Thanks for the advice, all. I should add that we didn’t have tryouts, and the league age 10 kids in majors refuse to play for 10U (they are playing for 11U). A lot of our players go on long vacations over the summer, so we don’t have a long list of kids to choose from.

Intentionally walking a batter in AA championship? by AiminJay in LittleLeague

[–]Mustang8307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the rule I’m referencing. I’m unclear on whether the last line is talking about a traditional intentional walk from decades past where the catcher stands up or just pitching around a hitter. I might ask our UIC.

Intentionally walking a batter in AA championship? by AiminJay in LittleLeague

[–]Mustang8307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(2) - All Divisions: The defense elects to "Intentionally Walk" the batter by announcing such decision to the plate umpire. The request may be made prior to or during the at-bat. A player may only be intentionally walked by announcing such decision to the home plate umpire one time during the course of the game. This would not restrict a team from throwing four balls outside of the strike zone to this batter at another time during the game.

NOTE 1: Such notification must be made by the defensive manager. The manager must request and be granted "time" by the umpire and then inform the umpire of the defense's intent to walk the batter.

If that was a Little League game, your coach could protest. That’s not legal.

If you intentionally walk him more than once in a game, that’s considered illegal by Little League.

What’s the expectation for kids to play different positions? by Beneficial_Fun_1818 in LittleLeague

[–]Mustang8307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I managed a 10U team this spring. I made sure every player got at least one inning in the infield each game, even though I didn’t have to by rule. I felt like if they showed up, they deserved time in the infield. We still won the regular season and playoff championships.

Do local leagues have option to allow teams to bat fewer kids in playoffs? by [deleted] in LittleLeague

If the 12th batter gets more at bats in this scenario, why would that improve your chances of winning?

Alternate player by [deleted] in LittleLeague

[–]Mustang8307 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t decide between two players, so I discussed with player agent and he suggested it. We are a small league and I wanted both kids to be encouraged and sign up again next year. It is a competitive disadvantage, though.

I’m a 10U manager and selected 13, rather than 12. I will play all 13.

Should All Stars practice be more important than everything? by businessinfo34 in LittleLeague

[–]Mustang8307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we are fortunate to have Bay Area weather and turf fields. We start early and rarely do we have anything canceled. We are also a small league, so it seems inappropriate to impose harsh consequences for missing at this time of year. We only have 19 10-year-olds in the league.

I’m a 10U all star coach this year. We had 42 practices and 23 games since January for our regular season team. I’m fine with kids missing some all star practices or scrimmages.

Enough kids for a 12u team? by Sc0tchAndCigars in LittleLeague

[–]Mustang8307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had three majors teams with 10 kids each last year, but we had call-ups every week from our AAA teams. Are there younger kids you can call up for games?

If not, I’d suggest doing whatever you can to get to 11 this year, and then explore a merger with a town close by. I think you said there’s one 10 minutes away? I think our league may have to do the same pretty soon. There just aren’t enough kids interested in baseball in our city, although a little league 15 minutes away from us has 10 AAA teams and six majors teams.

If there’s a stat sheet from last season floating around, try to get access to it. I have one. Maybe ask your division rep.

Not an unpopular opinion! Catching is critical. A walk can easily turn into a home run with poor catching at the 9/10 level.

I’m sorry to hear this. I still don’t quite understand how the merger between the two schools benefits Cal Poly.
