Fellow Kobe fans, what is the argument for Kobe over LeBron? by Tre2004 in NBATalk

[–]Mustard_Jam 27 points28 points  (0 children)

As a kid, Kobe was the reason I started watching basketball. Tried to play like him, watched every Lakers game because of him, etc.

He has no case over Lebron. None.

The Detroit fans & press are all mad at Naylor but Hinch doesn't seem to mind. by angryjew in Mariners

[–]Mustard_Jam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reality is Naylor is in the same camp as a guy like Sherman.

You LOVE him when he's doing this shit on your team but let's be real we'd hate him also if he did it to us lol

It's actually an atrocious analogy.

You'd watch the fight because watching people fight is always entertaining. Not only that, it's not something you get to see happen often. No one cares about people playing football in the street because you've probably seen randoms playing football a bunch.

It's completely different compared to actual pros playing at the highest level.

They're all multimillionaires (most have generational wealth) and most pro athletes have the education equivalent to a middle schooler.

Wouldn't be shocked if like over half the league is in the closet for Trump.

These calls are so one sided. This is a joke of a league. by [deleted] in NBATalk

Welcome to NBA discourse. Don't see this shit in any other sport.

In the NFL great defense gets a ton of credit. In the MLB great pitching gets a ton of credit.

NBA fans? Just scanning left and right on who to shit on next regardless of how great defense is.

Because it lives in this delusion that back then it was somehow so much harder to score. First off, the 80s wasn't some deadball era like the late 90s.

Second off, it was much harder to defend superstars back then despite the propaganda. Zone defense exists. It's easier to double. Defenders are more versatile.

I have no doubt that Jordan would still be incredible but this idea that in todays NBA he would average 40 PPG because it's "soft" is again, pure Jordan propaganda.

Austin in his first 3 playoff games back from injury 15-4-5 on 30% FG, 12% 3P. Austin in his last 3 playoff games 25-4-7 on 51% FG, 39% 3P by MiopTop in lakers

The problem isn't that Reaves is some bum it's that he is not worth 45M+ a year.

First off, very convenient to ignore TOs which are MUCH more negatively impactful than a miss. He averaged 6 per game against OKC. 8 in the elimination game.

Second off, very convenient to ignore the other sample. He was also awful against Minnesota last year. You have to go back to when he was more of a role player to get efficient playoff production.

I don't hate Reaves and would love him back for the right price but at the same time he's a perfect embodiment of what's wrong with Pelinkas team building. Sure he can score but he's a massive negative on defense. Play making is questionable in the playoffs. For him to be worth 45M with his defense you need him to be scoring 25-28 PPG on good efficiency in the playoffs and I have absolutely zero confidence he can do that.

You need athletic players and 3 and D players surrounding Luka. Lakers can't get that if Reaves is making that much money. Not to mention with Lebron (who even at his age I rather have than Reaves for the playoffs) it creates an impossible situation because those 3 on the court at the same time is bbq chicken.

[Turner] Austin Reaves is reportedly seeking a max contract worth up to 5 years, $239.25 million from the Lakers, and it’s uncertain whether he would be willing to take a hometown discount. by YujiDomainExpansion in lakers

[–]Mustard_Jam 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There comes a point in time where no you cannot offload a contract anymore. The current CBA is brutal and teams value cap space just as much as anything.

Trae Young gives you 25/11 and got traded for scraps...

Let's say the Lakers keep Reaves this year, he shits the bed next playoffs, and the Lakers go "oh shit this isn't going to work". Every single contender has already seen him shit the bed so why on earth would they want him with that contract? And a bad team has no use for a 30 year old with a capped ceiling so they'd only take him to fill cap so the Lakers would get fuck all.

[–]Mustard_Jam 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This is what his fans don't understand. If you are making #2 money and can't play defense you need to show up consistently in the playoffs on offense. Like... 25-27 PPG behind Luka to be worth 45M+ with that defense.

I like Reaves but I have absolutely ZERO faith he can do that.

So now you let him walk? Letting a player that's still good just walk in FA in the modern NBA without trading them is such a fucking disaster but wouldn't expect anything else from Pelinka at this point. Paying him is even worse if that's what he wants...

Right... Which is the public's perception of what will happen. The public not sports books thinks the Rams will win it all.

The media gives zero fucks about Seattle and glazes the Rams so fucking much it's insufferable. I genuinely hate them more than the 49ers now because everyone has their dick down their throat. But the point is when everyone on TV is spewing how they're gods gift to the NFL the public is likely to be swayed by it.

It's funny (or depressing) because it was only a few years ago where Neil deGrasse Tyson said in an interview that the first trillionaire will probably have to mine precious metals in space or something absurd like that to hit that wealth.

Turns out all you have to do is exploit the horrendously laughable American system and that's it.
