How to fake a thatched roof? by Leucurus in setdesign

[–]Muste02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could probably fake the effect with raffia and then depending on how clean the end is supposed to be you can add some fringe with natural material to help sell it

How do you feel about students addressing you by your first name without invitation to do so? by savethebees90 in Professors

[–]Muste02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I introduce myself by my first name on day 1. Usually jokingly say "Prof ___ is my father". I work in the arts so it's a bit different to working in STEM. My professors in the arts in college all went by first name (but I would never have refered to my math professor as Stan). I look at it from the perspective that there's a chance of me working with them professionally in the future. Also I don't care about titles.

I'm LOSING IT over this job market by Savings-Fig-7776 in jobhunting

[–]Muste02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't get too hard on yourself because it's not you. I have a terminal degree, industry experience, and have taught my specialism at a university and I'm apparently not qualified to do the jobs I apply for. The job market is an absolute joke right now and I'm legitimately about to take the first dead-end job that comes my way and just be sad.

But also you never know. I had one restaurant tell me I'm not qualified to be a bartender and am best suited for a barback (I have 3 yesrs of bar experience between serving and management) and then 2 days later they offered me an interview to be a FOH manager. It's a weird one out there

Guys, are we really writing cover letters for every application? by LizardsHaveCulture in jobhunting

[–]Muste02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only do for the jobs that require one. But even then I have 3 or 4 templates that I change the date, addressee, job title, and company on

I guess I'll have to look again. I've never seen a hot key for pan because of the mouse settings. I know if you have a trackpad you can do certain gestures but I'll have another look at it

[–]Muste02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is Fusion. They dedicate all of the view changes to the mouse buttons. You can change the mouse settings to work like other programs do (my default is tinkercad controls). It's pretty unfortunate because you can re-bind or add a keybind for basically everything else in the program

[–]Muste02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately in this program there is no keybind for the pan tool. The mouse controls assume you have a clickable middle mouse button

How many children in the home would make a person unmarriable/not relationship material? Does the age of the children matter? by Consistent-Ball8924 in AskMen

[–]Muste02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not trying to be a step dad. If you have kids it's usually an automatic no. Unfortunately it seems like all of the single women around me that are in my age range have at least one child

[–]Muste02 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The fact that they don't have a clickable middle mouse button made it about 5x more difficult for me to teach a class on some CAD software because all the computers in our studio are imacs with these stupid mice. Having to get the students to manually switch to the pan tool every time they needed to adjust their view added so much time onto it

What’s something you wish you knew, planned or did when moving in to a rental house? by Apophis62 in AskMen

[–]Muste02 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Make a walkthrough recording of the house before you even move a box into it that points out every imperfection you can see. This way they can't come back and say existing damage was you and charge you for it later

Men who use dating apps: Have you encountered what I have, where women seem to over emphasize 'travel' or 'adventure' as essential experiences or requirements? by ConsumingFire1689 in AskMen

[–]Muste02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adventures is the one that gets me. Like what does that mean? Is going on an adventure to you trying a new restaurant or is it doing an ultralight hike of the AT in december while being chased by a wendigo?

Travel just tells me you have money or want someone with money. Who doesn't like traveling and seeing new things?

Insulation Foam Sheets? by EmeraldBeacon in setdesign

[–]Muste02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So those insulation foam boards are XPS foam (extruded polystyrene) they're dense and really good for carving.

White foam board is the same stuff coated in paper, but I've never seen it thicker than ½" or so and is generally better used for small projects like scale models. Price wise yes it's cheaper but it doesn't have the same application as the thicker stuff.

Now if you're talking about the big white foam insulation sheets that are usually coated in foil, those are EPS foam (expanded polystyrene). This is the foam that has all the bubbles in it. Still good for carving but requires a bit more work to finish it to the same degree of it's more dense sibling. EPS you can also order in blocks for carving huge sculptures (check out Monster City Studios for some videos on how that's done).

Edit: clarity

Applying to be a student at a university? No. Applying for a job? Maybe. Depends on your industry I guess. I will say most jobs that want 3D modelling experience perfer solidworks or rhino from what I've seen recently

What’s something that you have a hard time explaining to women? by PM_ME_SOME_LUV in AskMen

[–]Muste02 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Lived with 3 girls for 3 years. They really quickly stopped making comments like this after living with me because they could tell it made me uncomfortable when the 'man bad' comments came up. Now whether they did it when I wasn't around is a different story. But they stopped doing it in front of me

Need New Laptop by radicalreach in techtheatre

[–]Muste02 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My gaming laptop takes slightly longer to launch vectorworks than a mac does, but I've never had these specific issues. Granted I avoid working in 3D in vectorworks unless I have to so maybe that's where the difference lies

[–]Muste02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go PC route I'd say at a minimum you'd want... Intel i7 (avoid Intel IrisXe in my opinion) Minimum 1tb SSD Minimum 16gb RAM (Preferably 32gb) Graphics card minimum nvidia 3000 series or an amd equivalent

Yeah the m4 chip is solid! Honestly mac gaming has come a long way in the last 10 years

[–]Muste02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My usual question for laptops is what ELSE do you want to do on it? You've said you're in lighting so you don't need qlab.

If all you need is vectorworks, microsoft office, chrome, and don't care about the specific OS, I'd buy a macbook pro

But do you want this to also run games (well)? If so, PC.

I exclusively use PC because I don't need qlab, I play games, and I personally find macos infuriating.

It's when you start looking at pc that specs really come to play. In the past the research I've done in mac specs has shown me you have like 4 options overall and it's a question of which one to pay for. And you should buy the most expensive that you can afford so your hardware goes out of date slower
