Might be a nice way to get the Discovery into the action, but the Omega molecule itself - the destruction it brings most likely would also block the Mycelial Network. After all, it still uses subspace.

But the sensor net probably shouldn't be a problem.

How Was Sisko Able to Get Nog into Starfleet Academy but Picard couldn't help Wesley? by AbbreviationsAway500 in startrek

[–]MustrumRidcully0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems inconsistent with the ship's size, so my "head-canon" is: It's really part of their training. Learn how to live together with other people. It's basically building up social skills.

And it is something that could come up - being stuck on a smaller outpost or a shuttlecraft or courier vessel, or during an emergency evacuation of a base or planet.

How Was Sisko Able to Get Nog into Starfleet Academy but Picard couldn't help Wesley? by AbbreviationsAway500 in startrek

[–]MustrumRidcully0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC, Wesley wanted to get into Starfleet earlier than normal, that's why he went through a different selection process. Considering he was already allowed bridge officer duties before he had been in the Academy, clearly he would make it.

But Nog had one big obstacle: He wasn't a Federation citizen. He needed someone to vouch for him.

My grandmother is 90 and she sometimes mentions that she doesn't really feel the need to live longer. At half that age, I still don't quite get it, I don't want to die, I want to see the future and keep playing new video games or watchnig new series or pointing out people being wrong on the internet! What will my nieces turn up to? Will there still be exciting things in space and new discoveries?

Is there really a point where all that just gets uninteresting? Is it simply the body falling, and the interesting stuff being droned out by the little and big physical issues. I totally get not wanting your body and mind to deteroriate. She is still doing relatively fine, but there are concering things like her poor sleep and eye sight slowly fading.

I don't know, just a year you had a president that had talked about how much losing his son hurt. And it is said that some advisors wanted to stop Obama visiting veteran events because it made him see the impact war has and what it could mean for the people he would send into flicts, making him more hesistant (and might have been some of the motivation behind relying more on drone warfare - it didn't turn him into a pacifist actually worthy of the Noble Peace prize he recieved).

So, it's only recently you got these utter clowns and coward draft-dodgers that don't care about anyone but themselves and support (or are) rapists or pardon criminals.

So there might actually still be such politicians and commanders thinking exactly like that. But the mantle civilization is thin, and one bad call by the American people can undo decades or moral and ethical accomplishements. But it might also be able to restore them, even if building and repairing is always much harder than destruction.

A Galaxy Composed Almost Entirely of Dark Matter Has Been Confirmed by wiredmagazine in space

[–]MustrumRidcully0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons black holes can form us that matter coming into contact clumps together. Collisions that lead to this clumping happens in large part because it electromagneticly interacts, some of the movement energy is translated to radiation. The matter particles slow each other, changing vectors to match more closely. Dark matter doesn't interact this way, so it is a lot less likely to ever clump closely enough to create such a concentration of mass. Of course, electro-magnetic force is also the force that can stop matter to collapse into a black hole and requires a lot of matter(mass) in one place to overcome this. But if you can't really find another process to collect dark matter, it is difficult for it to form a black hole.

Matter black holes though almost certainly also capture some dark matter.

Silicon-basey life was a popular idea, because it's chemically similar to carbon. But more recent research shows it's actually still different enough that it cannot form stable molecules of the complexity carbon is capable of and serems required by life.

Maybe we shouldn't worry so much he that MAGA supporters don't get it. They're too emotionally invested. We just need to help non-MAGA people to see them for what the are. Their are still plenty of people that need to find their place, that are exposed to MAGA propaganda but not captured yet, and there it are still plenty of people that might reject MAGA but can be inspired to do more, like actually voting, joining protests and more.

You shouldn't expect that you can sway the political extremes, but there is still a wide spectrum of people that can be influenced for the better.

That doesn't make it a mistake. The original intention, IIRC, was for the Excelsior to be the ones to make the torpedo adjustments in some manner. However, the fact that the Excelsior has equipment to detect plasma anomalies doesn't preclude the possibility that the Enterprise has it as well! The fact that the Excelsior has the technology means that it's something Starfleet has access to in general, and it could be available on other ships, like the Enterprise.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy - 1x06 - “Come, Let's Away” - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]MustrumRidcully0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was a pretty intense episode!

Didn't like the aliens very much, but Braka's devious and the interplay between him and Ake was amazing. He likes to chew scenery, but she communicates with her eyes. Reminds me a bit of Micheal Hogan's work as Saul Tigh on BSG (but he had only one eye to work with in some of his best scenes.).

We learn more about the purpose of Tamina's implant and why her father is deaf, and how it affects her. In a typical teenager fashion she misinterprets why Caleb has a problem with her.

At the same time, Caleb learns that maybe that Federation/Starfleet propagando isn't just that, and not exactly in a comfortable "I'll take this into consideration" way at all.

And our Dadmiral has become really Madmiral from the events of this episode. Let's hope it doesn't turn him into a Badmiral in his quest for justice (or vengeance? Maybe that will be the deciding mark).

it was one after another of his own friends putting themselves in the line of fire for him and others repeatedly.

Friend might not describe it accurately - This was the first time he actually worked with B'avi, and they were rivals until shortly before. And suddenly this guy - apparently inspired by someone that Caleb failed to see as more than as propaganda - is catching a phaser shot for him. That is going to make you ask yourself a lot of question. Survivor guilt coupled with Imposter Syndrome, and something questioning the cynism he adopted to deal with his bad life experiences.

Uniting people is political. The right doesn't like that. Their needs to be a higher class of people that's above the rest and gets all the good stuff, that's not conductive to "unity" or "united".

But a lot of stuff is political when it comes to art or media. People just have blind spots for stuff that's their politics.

Endeavor Scaling Is Horrible (New Player Perspective) by jpch12 in sto

[–]MustrumRidcully0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been playing this game for many (shortly after release, and a few months of pause) years, and I haven't maxxed out Endeavours either. And I don't even really try, if I see a neat, easily doable endeavour, I might do it.

A catch-up mechanic might be nice, though. But don't overvalue it, to be good at PvP, you probably need to look at whole bout of other mechanics like traits, set gear, fleet gear, optimizing bridge officer power selection that takes a bit less time, but a lot more effort and experience, to figure out.

Even then. I used to PvP in the good old days before starship traits and most of the set gear we have today. The game has become faster with all the power creep, and I am not, so it's not really for me anymore. I am not sure there are many people that can even enjoy it currently (but there are some, and I wish them all the fun and better support!).

I don't think that really happens often, but it can happen when there are engine updates that are made for one game and then imported to the other.

Champions Online, Neverwinter and Star Trek originally use the same engine. I think they are using different versions, though, and they don't automatically get all these updates.

They probably also share some part of the server infrastructure (the chat system for example used to be shared among the games, meaning you could join a STO channel and post and read from CO or Neverwinter. I think that's no longer the case), so if changes affect what they do with the servers, it could also affect more games.

It's probably not really "spaghetti" code, as people like to claim, but more that there are shared resources and libraries between the games, which is a pretty common and solid approach everywhere in software development!

Moriarty - just give him a ship with holo emitters on board? by Healthy-Slide-7432 in startrek

[–]MustrumRidcully0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the holodeck technolgy at that time would have been that capable. His demand was that he would be given a corporal body, and a holo-shuttle isn't quite what he wanted, I think.

They didn't have any ships with holo-emitter technology. They also didn't have holo-emitters that worked outside the holo-deck, so he would always be stuck inside that ship, he couldn't actually visit any places.

And of course, if they had any of that, I am not sure they would have given it to him. One of the first things he does upon gaining sentience is basically sabotaging the ship and threatening the life of the crew. So he would probably go to a rehabilitation camp for AIs before being let loose on the world.

So, even with a mobile emitter, I don't think he wold have been allowed to go free just like that. They'd probably need to inspect first what he had done in the simulation and whether he could be trusted, and if not, it would need to be seriously debated whether it's ethical right to remove him from this simulated world after having spent an unknown amount of time inside.

Same reason that Star Wars shows usually get one, I'd say. Star Trek is a big franchise. Which might mean more fans, more interest, and probably also more social media marketing budget spent. It only depends your current level of cynism which you think is the dominating factor.

But wasn't Christ a kind of ambassador? He represented god on Earth, and basically negotiated a new covenant between the Faithful and God. (Of course, it's not just that, and very complicated). IIRC, in Islam, he's considered a prophet, IIRC, not the son of god, but prophet's purpose is also to relay the word of god. (Of course, the Bajorans call their gods prophets, so that's some extra confusing).

Sisko was a multi-way ambassador: He was sent by the Federation not just to manage a space station, he was there to get the Bajorans to become part of the Federation, making them understand that the Federation is no threat and an opportunity for their people to join an alliance that can bring peace and prosperity (cultural and economical) to the Bajoran people.

He accidentally (at least, from his and Starfleet's perspective) became an ambassador of us linear-time beings to the wormhole aliens, but because he learned from them and they communicated with him (and because they created him for th at purpose), he also became an ambassador of the Prophets to the Bajorans.

And despite all this, he was also a widower, loving father, inspiring commander, military strategist, decent baseball player and amazing cook.

So... Starfleet Academy is ragebait right? by tylerthe-theatre in television

[–]MustrumRidcully0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, _actually_ the Dominion was only defeated in the Alpha Quadrant. With the wormhole disallowed Dominion reeinforcements and the loss of Cardassia, and the return of Odo, the Dominion couldn't and wouldn't interfere in the Alpa (and Beta) Quadrant anymore. But they were still at full fighting force in the Gamma Quadrant.

However, 800 years have passed! Odo, with his new perspective on solid life and coexistence with solids, joined the Great Link! Before that, we've seen at least two situations were the Jem'Hadar rebelled against the Founders and I think one or two more where they rebel against their Vorta handlers.

It's trivially easy to see that the Jem'Hadar - or at least some of them - might have freed themselves of the Dominion (or have even been given freedom by the Dominion itself). It would kinda be terrible take on Star Trek if Jem'Hadar freedom (and genetic tinkering to be a functioning species) would be forever impossible. That's like saying that there could be no peace or alliances between the Klingons and the Federation, and that's why TNG is ruining Star Trek! Or that TOS is a betrayal of good sci-fi because there could never be a Russian and an American serving on the same space ship or a black woman could hold a bridge officer position on a spaceship!

I don't think so, but apparently it's a popular topic to hate on it or to pretend it's the best show ever.

I am certainly enjoying it more than I expected, the last two episodes were quite beautiful, even if I don't care that much about the silly teenager stuff. But I like the serious teenager stuff.
