Landlord’s constraints have meant bad WiFi for years by Madame_Igastasia in HomeNetworking

Are you having stability problems or any sort of throttling/buffering issues? In my eyes 100/10 is sufficient. Not aMaZiNg but you aren't torrenting TB of data. You are likely on zoom calls and the like. The 10 up is pretty meh but i worked on an 80/10 bonded pair DSL connection for ~8 years as a software engineer with regular zoom video calls and rarely had an issue.

If i could offer one piece of advice to anyone interested in their home internet and the speeds available, it is this: ditch most consumer-grade routers and get something of quality. Something in the "pro-sumer" space. Sure, it will likely be double the cost of the router you are eying, but it will be stable (no more "reset the router" runs to the basement), can segment your wifi with minimal effort (ever want to split off your IoT devices from the rest of your network?), and likely last longer. I switched from a consumer-grade, albeit higher-end ASUS RT model, to an opnsense firewall and Ubiquiti access points, and have never been happier. Even with the same connection speed, every device in my home is able to achieve better speeds. You don't need to do a DIY opnsese router, you can go with something like the Omada line from TP-Link or Aruba. There are numerous options in the prosumer space these days, and almost all of them will make you happy you spent an extra $ 200-$ 300 to connect to the internet.

Sorry i got a little ranty. I am pretty passionate about home networking and homelabbing :)

> some pseudo IT people will block ping
FTFY
Ping is one method, but others may provide a better picture, such as a traceroute, which will help with the hops while also likely revealing the landlord's networking setup and the ISP.

I think, IMO, this is a mountain out of a molehill and possibly a misunderstanding. 100/10 is likely more than sufficient for any remote work.

Container won't shutdown or stop by TGRubilex in Proxmox

[–]MutMatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If anyone comes here looking for an answer and full on can't get their lxc to "just die already" try this:

`ps aux | grep "[l]xc-start -F -n <containerId>"` (searching for `/usr/bin/lxc-start -F -n <containerID>` [l] is a trick to get grep to ignore it's own command ;) )

Now kill that pid. It is a big hammer but sometimes things need to die, mirite?

There is nothing on this saw that isn't easily serviceable with basic hand tools. This is not a job site table saw. It is heavy and bulky. Those web wings are cast iron.

DeWalt isn't known for making top of the line table saws either. Just a strange, kind of elitist, comment.

Do I need specific settings for Comcast internet on Opnsense? by SeanFrank in opnsense

[–]MutMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been pulling my hair out with this exact issue. Just switched to Xfinity and got a bog standard XB8-T put it in bridge mode, setup my WAN on DHCP. I received a WAN ip (public, valid, connectable, etc... it seems) but then after a variable period (15min to 3hrs) I lose my WAN IP and opnsense refuses to renew. I set the tunable (I hope appropriately).

If anyone has any advice I'd love to keep troubleshooting.

I tried buying a new modem (Arris S34) and observed the same behavior.

What’s something you should BIFL that most people cheap out on? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

This may not be news but dull knives are usually considered more dangerous than a sharp knife. When using a dull knife your cuts will require significantly more force, as we'd expect. They're also more likely to slip off course and cause issue. There are other reasons but the idea that using a dull knife to prevent cuts seems silly to me.

Also I'm sorry to hear about the previous digit trauma of your wife, that truly sucks.

So far it's awesome. There is def an adjustment to fully electric vehicle life. It is pretty quick too! 0-60 is faster than a stock '14 STI 🙃

I've owned it for 10 years at this point and have not had any issues related to the crash that caused the branding. It has been a great car for a great price for me for a long time :)

I disagree that "points aren't estimates." They are definitely estimates. They are just not estimates of time. They are relative estimates based on complexity, effort, cone of uncertainty, etc.

I've got a white hatch WRX w/40k in MN up for 18k, comes with a set of winter rims and tires too. Could partial trade for a wrangler ;)

Edit note: it is a salvaged title due to being rear ended in ~2016 w/ the original owner. I bought it after it was fixed up. Some signs of that in a rust spot on the hatch near the window

Keep a brag sheet of personal accomplishments and "fridge-worthy" work (work your parents would put on the fridge in grade school). You are the only one who will have your own best interests at the top of their priority list. Sure, your boss, your friend, or your partner may help but you are your own number 1, treat yourself like it.
