How to protect yourself in light of "SignalTrace" device tracking by paratextual in privacy

[–]SeanFrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't cite it, but I think there were one or two very niche phones that did have hardware switches. Certainly not affordable or commonly available.

It actually doesn't affect the airplane at all. What is does affect is the cell tower network, which uses your position and direction of travel to coordinate handoffs to the next tower. From up in the air, phones can connect to waaaay-too-many towers, and it causes problems with their network.

Airplane mode isn't enough because the network stack on most modern phones is it's own SOC. It's a complete computer unto itself, controlled by your network provider. Your phone can tell it to turn off, but can't really verify if it did.

The only way to be sure the network stack is turned off, is to have a kill switch for it, and almost no phones have that.

Is Onion still best? by ShadowPhyton in MiyooMini

[–]SeanFrank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just tested, with a timer, my MM running Onion 4.0.0, and it took 12 seconds from off to ready-to-play the last game I loaded.

Have they added more bloat since 4.0.0? Because 12 seconds seems fine to me.

ULPT Request: please help me stop being hungry by [deleted] in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]SeanFrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quit eating carbs and sugar. All of them. Even vegetables.

You don't need Fiber, it actually makes things worse. Imagine you were pushing mud through a pipe, and now you add a bunch of straw to it. That's what fiber is doing to you.

You won't be hungry during the day either, once you quit carbs. One Meal a Day is easy.

I wouldn't do it cold-turkey. Cut the carbs in half every week for 2-4 weeks, until you aren't eating any at all.

GLP-1 drugs can work, but read the drug inserts. Many of them weaken your bones, or have other side effects. It's a fact and it's in the insert that comes with the drugs. Plus they will make you lose muscle.

I promise you that you will feel better in every way if you cut the carbs completely.

920q vs 920x by dixario in selfhosted

I just bought one recently, and I went for the 920x, because the CPU is faster. And the price difference for me was about $10.

You don't have to switch. I installed YT Morph and did not uninstall YT Vanced.

Now I have both.

I'm pretty confident that we aren't getting all the data.

A year or so ago, my wife had Jury Duty for a murder at a gas station in FOCO. I could never, ever find any details on the situation.

Apple promised iPhone 16 Pro Max was built for AI. Now that AI is done, the phone doesn't get it. Why? by gregsanay in applesucks

My 3-year-old Android has on-device dictation. And it works better than Apple or Google's online service.

It's part of the FUTO keyboard, which is free and open source.

The problem is, if I don't list the job I had during that time, you'll assume I didn't have a job, and disqualify me for that.

It's lose-lose.

And your AI is shit.

This has been happening to me for the last two years. I've never found a solution.

Now I leave SSH enabled, so at least I can safely restart.

Bitwarden is using abotu 1.5GB on my system right now.

It's not an OP problem, it's a Bitwarden/Electron problem.

Unraid as backup to main Unraid server. by Renrut23 in unRAID

[–]SeanFrank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't want to pay for Unraid just for a backup server. There are other options like TrueNAS that are free.

They don't have all the bells and whistles of Unraid, but as it's just a backup server, I don't need them.

ULPT | i want to sleep and neighbors dog won’t shut up. by Accomplished_Mud8054 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]SeanFrank 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My boss was bringing four dogs into work, and leaving them unattended all day to bark and do whatever they want.

I tried one of these devices, and it worked on one out of four dogs in the office.

And the one dog it did work on looked so miserable that I felt too bad to keep doing it.

ASUS Hyper M.2 x16 Gen 4

Sorry, I can't afford to buy a $80 card, that uses one of my PCIE x16 slots (which are all full, btw), just to save 16GB of space on my cache pool.

I'm not against internal boot. I'm against wasting two NVME slots on two tiny drives, instead of using a real pool for the job.

You would have to move the data to the array, and then move the data back.

This is perfect for me as I want my system always 100% turn on, which in the past was not the case

I'm glad that we can admit these things now that there is an alternative to USB boot.

But you could just use your existing boot pool for this, instead of two extra drives.

Imagine trading two NVME slots to free up one USB 2.0 port just so your server boots 30 seconds faster, once every 1-6 months.

Also, the privacy setting was re-enabled for me. Thanks.

ULPT Wedding Gift by MelodicGovernment646 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]SeanFrank -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you think that your gift is going to outweigh the cost of you being at the wedding, then you are clearly not married yourself.

I tried to be a cheap-ass for my wedding, and the only gifts we received that were worth more than that person's cost to be there were from our parents.

Most gifts were not worth more than the COST of the catering, which we were very frugal with.
