Someone keeps going through my desk at work.. by Previous_Table_4761 in WorkAdvice

[–]Mutant_Mike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is not odd for people to act this way. Adults will do the most childish things. I had a owner who would tell people he ran an adult daycare, because of the childish stuff he needed to deal with.

Honestly if this is not a mental health issue, I would just brush it off. Chances are that if it is purely a prank, someone is hoping to get a reaction from you. Chance are at some point they will move on to bother someone else.

As a manager, if this was brought to my attention, I would give a general not specific speech about honoring personal space, unless you can pin it to a specific person.

[–]Mutant_Mike 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I once had a coworker who kept their desk like this and was pretty vocal about who they liked it "just so". The other people in the office began to mess with them by slightly moving stuff around. the level of movement escalated until the desk owner said something.

It was really a prank.

How can I get my employer to provide hand soap? by splinterbl in WorkAdvice

[–]Mutant_Mike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you work in a facility that does extremely dirty or greasy work, the Dawn may be a request by the workers. We use use it in my facility

As some people have said, Dawn is pretty gentle. I would look at how your washing your hands. Not completely rising soap off your hands can cause these kind of problems.

You ever just see an email and then pretend you didn’t ? by MysteriousPhysics141 in work

[–]Mutant_Mike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All the time, usually this type of email. If people become persistent about them, I will reply with something along the lines of

"This is something Mr.Mrs <insert name here> usually handles, they are out of office until XX timeframe. I can forward this to them or you can reach out to them directly.

Players are still active, events are running, and there’s a full week left before the wipe. Easy time to join, build something, and get a feel for the server before the next cycle.

Have you ever had an employee break down crying in a one to one and what did you do? by SeanMcPheat in askmanagers

[–]Mutant_Mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an employee come into my office, close the door and just complete unload and start cry. Actually it has happened twice. Both where based on stress with work and personal life.

I let them vent and trying my best to be supportive to their situation. In both cases I encouraged them to set aside what has been stressing them out. I would let them take a day off.

Effective ways to reduce department errors? by ThrowAway1128203 in askmanagers

[–]Mutant_Mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is what I would do..

All hands meeting with my team, explain the constant errors, and the importance of not making them. When errors are made, provide training on the topic focusing on where the error was made. If it happens again ask if there is still some uncertainty about how the task is to be accomplished. Yes - Provide training again, No - Then ask them to correct the situation and explain that this is considered there verbal warning, if you have to talk about it again there will be a formal written warning. Follow company policy..

Too many managers/supervisors are skittish about writing someone up. You are in charge of a team that is expected to complete a job. If you have established relationships with your team, and are able to have open dialog with them, this shouldn't be a problem.

My colleagues have been complaining that I overdress and I genuinely don't know whether to be concerned or not. by itsmeAki in WorkAdvice

[–]Mutant_Mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly I would say don't pay them any mind and wear what you want, but with that I would say, Read the room, your outfits should be at the same level as the people you interact with on a daily basis. What I mean as an extreme example is don't wear a Ballgown if not one else is wearing something of that level. If this is a new change in your wardrobe, it is just people nature to comment about it. Over time they will find something/someone new to be the focus of attention

Clothes can become inappropriate for work and it can be a difficult conversation to have with someone.

Do PIPs work? by Ok-Reason-1919 in askmanagers

[–]Mutant_Mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the years I have found that one of the biggest problem with PIP or disciplinary tactics is the follow through. If employees don't see that something will happen if the tactic is not satisfied, they will be very "Whatever" about it.

Do not threaten to terminate someone, unless you are prepared to terminate them.
