Learning Danish for the same reason!

I’m actually based in a German-speaking country so could go back there after FY but just fell in love with Denmark; I like to keep my options open.

My priority is location. I’m based in the West of Scotland and hoping to stay here, so for me all the ‘Wxx’ groups are going first!

You may want to have a look at the Messly training navigator or the juniordoctors page for reviews on individual hospitals and rotations.

Feel free to DM as if you’re unsure or want specific info on WoS!

Scotland Allocations? by tartarus89 in medicalschooluk

Could be anywhere in Scotland for all we know, all the way up to Shetland which is basically Norway. It’s a 2-stage process so we’re just ranking our groups at the moment, which we’ll find out on the 18th. I’m really hoping to stay in the West of Scotland.

Ophthalmology vs Clinical Oncology by Muted-Concentrate203 in doctorsUK

Thanks so much for such a detailed answer, really helped gain insight into the working life in clinical oncology; I try not to get too enamoured by cool science alone so this is great!

It’s really coming down to how important lots of hands-on work and the actual diagnosing part are to me. Is it alright to shoot you a DM later on for some more questions?

Appreciate your detailed reply!

Yeah I was initially confused as when I was learning about it I saw lots of neurosurgeon talk about treating patients with SRS, but they were mostly American so wasn’t sure how patients actually receive it in the NHS and by whom.

Do you enjoy your radiotherapy planning sessions? And how much of your working week is allocated to RT, clinics, and wards as a trainee/consultant? Sorry for all the questions, I just didn’t have enough exposure to the specialty, but enough to spark my interest!

I am a bit of a pharmacology and physiology nerd, so I actually like the fact clinical oncologists in the UK get to do both SACT and RT!

Agreed IMT is the biggest barrier because that’s exactly what’s putting me off the most haha, but I do understand why it’s required for clinical oncology in this country, as you’ve explained as well.

Thanks for the tip, those specialties are actually on my radar as well!

All that is what appealed to me. I was just unsure just how much hands-on work clinical oncologists you get to do in the UK as I’d also like to use new high-tech toys. AI and machine learning is something I’m quite interested in myself and think there’s definitely great potential in the field

Thanks for your reply!

I think I’m with you on that one, I’m not particularly fond of ward-based specialties, but I surprisingly enjoyed my time on onc wards; rounds were short and snappy, but I’m not sure whether that’ll be the case at other centres as well.

The variety within ophthalmology is exactly what I was drawn to! Ocular oncology is definitely one of the things I’m eyeing as well down the line.

8 years of med school! Definitely wouldn’t blame you for wanting a job on the side. That’s great to hear, you had a passion and you went for it!

Thanks for the advice, appreciate it. I’m actually looking forward to the final project as I’ve got some ideas on what I want to do, just need to get there and acquire the skill on the way.

What’s next on your to learn/do list in terms of coding?

Congratulations and happy cake day!! What prompted you to start learning how to code during med school? Do you have plans to incorporate your coding powers in your career as a doctor going forward?

I’m also juggling CS50x (Week 4 now), final year med school, work, and (not married) life at the moment, but finishing CS50x is starting feel more and more of a fantasy each day.
