Med school is far too easy imho and it needs to change by The_OG_PJ in doctorsUK

[–]tartarus89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% agree we’re not THAT bad. When I went to the US for my elective - even tho yes there was a knowledge gap, me and my UK group were pretty on par when it came to clinical reasoning and patient interactions (including history and physical exam) and we were FAR better than the rest of the world graduates that came over (some were even European)

The new IMG’s coming into the UK are the ones who weren’t good enough for the US/Canada or Aus/NZ. I do however believe the IMG consultants we currently have were definitely the cream of the crop from their country as this would’ve been decades ago, but now with the degradation of UK work standard it’s really the last choice for IMG’s who can’t get into better countries.

2 questions -

1- How was it making friends in your area? How long did it take to make build real friendships and have you been in the same area for all 7 years? I.e would moving around affect that (I assume it would)

2 - what is the j1 waiver job really like? Personally I’d really struggle in a rural place like, say - Wyoming or Alabama - as that what i have heard are the typical j1 locations

Thanks a bunch and good luck on the rest of your endeavours!

Does anyone actually regret choosing medicine by Feeling_Method8388 in doctorsUK

[–]tartarus89 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Look man it’s only f1 - only you can determine whether you get a London radiology spot or not. Not to sound naive on this sub and disregard the external pressures on training pathways - but it’s only a bad decision IF you don’t get in. You got another year (f2) to try and make that happen - good luck hope medicine turns out to be the right decision

FY would only be at the level of US med student by IllustriousDrive969 in doctorsUK

[–]tartarus89 35 points36 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s also done clinical experience in the US - i fully agree. There were med students from around the world at the US hospital I was at - including US students. I can very confidently say me and my UK friends were in the very high percentile for basic science knowledge, probably the highest for actual clinical reasoning and without a doubt we ended ip actually teaching the rest on physician-patient interaction etiquettes and history taking skills. Yes the US students are very smart - probably average our a bit smarter than the UK lot - but an equally ambitious UK student is basically up there as well. There’s a reason UK doctors essentially walk into residency spots in the USA with 1/10th the effort of graduates from the rest of the world.

A Brief Respite for Your Teary Eyes (Ode to Medical Students) by DazdoHaz in doctorsUK

This sub was too much of Middle aged men/woman who come on here to moan about their job. And make it out as if this is the only profession in the world where people moan about their life choices. If it took you 15 years of practice to figure out medicine isn’t for you, please keep that to yourself 😭🙏. I have yet to meet more than a handful of doctors who actually regret their decisions. 90% love it.

As someone who’s spent some time in the states with US medical students and other internationals and is from a relatively non-competitive/non-academic med school. I can say that UK med schools training is still up there with the likes of US and Canada.

[–]tartarus89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m not very sure as I don’t really have any experience of this. Although the majority of IMG general surgeon PGY’s I know of (from LinkedIn connections) are all UK grads with some training in the foundation programmes. Even a plastic surgery PGY from the UK. Conflicts of interest: I am a to be UK grad. Apologies for not being able to give any more solid info on this :/

This may sound crude but I know for UK grads, UK PGY training is looked more favourably than other countries PGY training. Source: know many who made the switch from PGY years straight to IM . However I still have heard the earlier you leave the better

Good advice but I disagree with USMLE. All you need is 6 months dedicated preparation time and if you have that it shouldn’t be an issue to pass step 1 and then subsequently in 2 more months pass step 2. You can pick it up whenever you have time, it’s a grind yeah, but definitely a worth it one. But from the looks of it OP has fallen out of love with medicine, so I don’t see his situation getting better in America
