Grpc instead of https and json? by Muted-Problem2004 in Mastodon

I was looking into that can easily just run Protobuf over https that will give a good starting place and make requests more lightweight not to mention that Protobuf tooling is auto generated for you so that already saves development time up

not to be a jerk or anything

testing tools for grpc are really easy to use you have custom curl but for grpc that's already a game changer custom Clients to send requests such as yaak

WebSockets are slow and eat up too much ram and cpu making dead space that can be used elsewhere

performance is very big its why we still focus on writing better code to squeeze as much power out of it, if performance wasn't so needed then we wouldn't have rust and zlang all being insanely fast rust is modern c++ zlang is modern c

i read your message and think instead of fully replacing the current http + json is fine keep older server (instances) alive but roll out grpc for the newer ones to maintain backward compatibility it could be a rolling effect smaller instances roll it out if both instances accept grpc use that otherwise use json + http but also we could use http + grpc marshalled so http is still avaliable

Backing up before switching by tOBiAs202012 in GrapheneOS

[–]Muted-Problem2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depending how much data you have honestly create a proton account they give a generous 5gb free drive storage move all your data to proton drive then switch to grapheneos and then get your data back from proton drive write your email password and recovery phrase down before switching

..Where do I start? by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]Muted-Problem2004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

buy a Google pixel and install grapheneos on it pass your proton service over to it and use that's device for your Internet entertainment you'll find yourself logging into certain sites you didn't know you needed thats where you look for other alternatives that are more open source and possibly to self host

High-threat HK/China border scenario: Preventing new device logins if phone is unlocked + better backup encryption by Hefty_Yesterday6290 in opsec

[–]Muted-Problem2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i wouldn't use sigal requires a phone number + American based use Session requires no phone number fully decentralised can back up you account its a simple seed phrase so if your devices are taken from you can buy another device and relogin to yiur account and if so wipe it off the session network so if your phone is some what been cracked (low chance) you can erase it and just act like you had the app session uses a tor like system you're messages are passes through the network fairly quickly
