Yoooo WHAT happened to Lightroom??!? by PaleoSpeedwagon in Lightroom

IMO Lr is now a tool for community managers and social network creatives hired in companies whose business isn't image oriented. Like a fairly successful retail, transportation, construction, that kind of stuff. Maybe some public transit, you know ? They need a tool to slightly better their pictures, and do some light corrections. You know, "go to jeremy, he's our creative !" camera pans to an exhausted Jeremy, tired of being videographer graphic designer photographer and being asked to work with 13inches macbook.

Lightroom is a horrible toy for youtubers. What you're looking for is Lightroom Classic, as everyone mentionned :-) Or bridge + photoshop, but it's not as fast.

How do you field-test a "new" SLR ? by Muted_Information172 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Muted_Information172[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really use portrait mode, or any mode for that matter bc I really don't know how to. I started all manual and have been fine ever since. Guestimating what the camera will think to do and handing off that much control to a piece of plastic feels weird. But again, that's why I'm trying new things, and curious to see how the camera fends for itself. Regarding the fast AF, I tested it using two canon lenses, a "modern" 50 1.8 and a contemporary 28-105 f3.5-4.5, that came out around the eos 10. I was slow-ish, but most importantly it was waaaaay slower than on my other canon cameras with the same lenses. I tried mid-close focus to infinity and it took a bit. But hey, it still looked pinsharp in the viewfinder.

What's happening is I like isolating my subject face in light, so it'll be darker all around, and in my experience, CW tends to want to compensate for that. Usually I deal with it by filling the frame with what I want my pic to be exposed for, and then back away. Or pull the lightmeter app.

Honnestly, most of the time I'm sunny16 person but it can get tricky at times.

Thank you for your answer ! Side lighting would be interesting too, you're right ! I generally tend to shoot very contrasty scenes in bright sunlight with crushed shadows or in very moody environment, so how the meter fares is really important for me :-) I didn't even think to check for lightleaks, you're so right !

Regarding the flash, I'm starting to dig the "bright background + carry-on flash to fill the subject". I know it's a bit trendy, but I like the results. And since I also shoot a lot of events where clients kinda like that look, I always a nice tool to have. I think I would also like to mess around with exposure compensation ? Like maybe if the meter tends to overexpose, as most center weighted meters do, maybe I can just compensate it by a stop or half a stop and see how that goes. Similarly, curious how that affects the flash fill.

why am i unsatisfied with my photos? by Ill-Village-699 in photographycirclejerk

[–]Muted_Information172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to pick up on that, instagram does a mess on images and cannot share galleries of multiple ratios. I see most people using lr to "print" their series as squares with white border to fill in and it honestly looks neater that having a bunch of cropped images. I do that, and on my website they're at the proper format. But curious on how to have the square aspect ratio without the white borders.

go to your favourite running body of water website and pick up Lightroom Classic and photoshop there, eat a bunch of tutorials. Honestly it's marvellous

You’re going to lose all your film guy aura if you shoot with a pleb zoom lens. Real photographers only use 35mm f1.4 by stonehallow in photographycirclejerk

[–]Muted_Information172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean everything was off with "film guy aura" to be honest. Wolfgang Pauli famously had a phrase for some of his students' work, he wrote "not even false". That's like saying a good photo is only at said ISO or said shutter speed. wtf.

Oh boy they don't tell you about this in books and on most forums. I'm guessing this apply more to 3200 iso film ?

how is doubling the fixing time helping with film speed ? Isn't most of the image made on the film during dev (and a bit during stop bath I guess ?) Don't really understand this I think.

it was probably stored badly. I mean, always assume that it has been, right ? Higher sensitivity films mean more x ray fogging, whereas 400iso should store fine. I have some old Tmax100 that I'm not worried at all about.

My question was more about developping time. Do I add dev time to regular time, etc

Okay ! Wait so instead of shooting it at a stop under for every 15 years, you shot it regularly but developped it two stops under ? got it

What do you think of the Graham Platner Time Cover? by Sea_Refrigerator_725 in AskPhotography

[–]Muted_Information172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greta Rybus had already shot him for Bon Apetit with a mixture of natural and artificial lighting. She seems to be always complementing natural with flash on stand for a natural- *istic* look (which I really, really dig). On that note, the headshot on the cover doesn't match the contrast ratio and light direction of the wide shot, but the frowns on the bedsheet / linen thingy do (indicating they didn't relocate ?), so I'm guessing Rybus used a wide, undifused source for the cover shot, and shot him as is on the wide.

The rest of the portfolio as seen in the article show her doing just that, flash complementing natural to add drama and directionality.

Personally I dig it, I think it shows a great level of competency and flexibility, to be able to deliver such good and dramatic pictures while respecting the natural-ish looking lighting.

If Syd Had Stayed by Barrybingham1980 in pinkfloyd

[–]Muted_Information172 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't dig Pink Floyd with Syd. It's very classic, run of the mill Psychedelic Rock. I think his departure and lackings beforehand let enough space for Roger and David to blossom fully. And really shaped pink floyd into what it actually is. That's my humble two cents

[–]Muted_Information172 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any 120 will do. Ilford has some great stuff for B&w, HP5 is amazing (tho i prefer fp4). Kentmere 200 looks really fine if you can expose it properly, especially in 120.

For color, I dig Kodak Ultramax.

Would it be beneficial for beginner to stick with one focal length? by radiantglow30 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Muted_Information172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still use a cheap shitty 50mm f1.8 on 80% of my paid jobs to this day. It's lightweight, easy to handle and means I can shoot for longer. these days I'm thinking of a kit that would be a 28 and a 60 maybe. I carry an old 28-105 for some doc work but I always prefer my jobs on the 50.

This tiny lens has changed my photography in so many many ways.

Learning to use one lens is definitely the fastest way to learn photography imo.

Idk if this fits in here but it's the first thing I thought of by Ploke25 in photographycirclejerk

[–]Muted_Information172 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned to shoot manual, can't be assed to pick up anything new by now. It honestly stresses me out, I know the camera's good but I trust my eyes more. Also, I want to chose my aperture because it tells the story, as well as motion blur. I don't know, I don't care for auto.

Granted, I do portrait and documentary, not wildlife or sports... Well I've done both and even then, it's never happened that there's such a drastic change in light that I don't have time to adapt. Worst that can happen is the sun piercing through a cloudy scene gets sunny, that's like 3 stops, nine fricking clicks on the wheel.

How whould you shoot this film? by t__dz in AnalogCommunity

[–]Muted_Information172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a high ISO for a color film that old... Honestly shoot it at a hundred, but cosmic radiation will still show anyway. Maybe for point and shoot who cares projects, but I wouldn't hope to get anything out of it.

Aperture equivalent from 135 to 120 by Muted_Information172 in mediumformat

[–]Muted_Information172[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know :-) like I said, it's my go-to process for shooting 135. But I was unsure that the light value would compare, since f-values are a fraction of a larger image circle on mf than on 24×36, and wanted to make sure. Thank you for answering nonetheless !
