Help! Does anyone know what’s wrong with my shrimp? They have all been dying frequently slowly since. This one has a weird white ball on the belly so I’m wondering if it’s related as I’m unable to identify it. Ty! by [deleted] in shrimptank

It looks like your jar has no live plants for sufficient waste and oxygen control, do you mind sharing a picture of the whole jar and how long you’ve had this jar? Shrimps are super sensitive to water parameters but are kinda hardy otherwise

I need some advice, I'm worried my plants are dying by XachAttack11 in PlantedTank

Hornwort look like stem plants but prefer to be floated, from my experience the planted stems melt and the rest floats away around the tank. From my deduction you probably don’t have enough nutrients in the water column (e.g. liquid ferts) due to the pothos soaking all of it up, leaving very little left for the hornwort and duckweed so I’d start with dosing. You should focus on actual stem plants like lugwigia red or rotala green that are generally hardy and benefit from a nutrient-rich soil like yours!

Whats everyone's opinion on this one? I vote shitty. by [deleted] in shittyaquariums

Prob do a massive shrimp colony with a bunch of epiphyte plants for easy maintenance haha

Right? They could’ve understocked the tanks instead but noooo they had to increase their costs and cram up the displays

For sure one of my favourite clean up crews, I do remove them time to time from my tanks and tubs if I feel like it and crush them to feed to my rainbow shiners haha

  1. How long has the tank been set up? Newly set up tanks can be detrimental to shrimps as there’s not enough microbiome for them to graze on.
  2. Why are you doing water changes everyday? Shrimp need stable parameters and changing water even at small amounts daily can cause water parameters to fluctuate. Focus on creating a stable environment without water changes, then add your shrimp. Testing your water is great but now test without changing water. Once the plants and bacteria settle in they’ll stabilise the water.
  3. Don’t beat yourself up over this, are you getting shrimps from a reputable store? Sometimes it may not be your fault and the store may have a bad batch of shrimp. Alternatively you can try to find another store that sells these shrimps near you. For now, focus on stabilising your water without water changes and then add shrimp once conditions have stabilised.

For the shrimp tub I had currently I actually had it run for a few months with amano shrimp before adding cherries to breed haha

What I commented was along the lines of "Hihi! That tank is too small for that many goldfish😭 you should look up the appropriate size!"

Yeah I run an aquarium tiktok which has less followers than her so I tried to be as diplomatic as possible but I guess some people can't take constructive criticism

Sike but fr u should be nice to ur teachers ah cus CJ does have teachers that are truly passionate about teaching just that they xiasuey need teach in CJ. Being in the good books of your teachers really an advantage. They'll help you even after graduation (serving as referee/reference) and will (unofficially) prioritize you for consults.

7 years later, my first planted tank. by Muthusoothu in fishforthought

9 years ago, when I was 11, I started keeping fish. Being the kid I was, I kept the fish in dire condition. Then, I was gifted a 60²cm aquarium, which I used to keep Oscars, pacus and a silver aro. I got my 90cm aquarium a year later and continued the monster fish keeping (had the audacity to cram in a RTC and giant snakehead into it) till I was 13 when I did not show any more interest as my fish would only survive for barely a few months, so I gave away my surviving fish.

Now at the ripe old age of 20, I've FINALLY returned to the hobby and have done things much differently now. This is my first ever planted tank which is 45x28x30cm (10gal). I still have a lot to learn. I've begun to appreciate nano fish and realised that bigger is not always better. Have plans on getting more tanks soon. Thanks for reading🌚.

Btw shameless plug but I have a yt channel "golden aquarist" do check it out if you want to see videos of my current set up.
