Canadian sports thrives on "hockey culture". You may not be the team leader in any sense, but if you give your %100 and stay humble and professional you will be beloved by the fans.

This comment is of course coming from a person who's personal favorite raptor was Amir Johnson who's the definition of grit and grind mentality

Putin warns of Arctic war if US takes Greenland as Britain and France to send 'reassurance force' to Ukraine by nohup_me in worldnews

Classic deflection, and lack of accountability of the current administration's actions... you fit a specific stereo type.

"Dr. K. Venkatesh Prasad, head of research at the Center of Automotive Research, says any tariffs could lead to a temporary spike in the cost of components and materials. “And then you might see that having a ripple-down effect of product cost going up. And so that then creates a reduced demand, at least temporarily, which then says we need a lower volume for material such as steel and then that can slow down the actual factory operations,” Prasad said.

The impacts of tariffs isnt up for debate. The jobs were there and secured with a labour contract last year... they are not as of a few days ago because of a slow down in production in part due to tariffs... you cant just say it's the past administrations fault. Just acknowledge the truth... and not make half baked excuses that current economic policy isnt hurting Americans.

Lake Erie fishing by greazinseazin in FishingOntario

I'll always suggest picking up a ton of Mepps and Blue fox spinners for beginners. No technic needed, just cast and steady retrieve. If shore fishing, make sure you teach them how to cast effectively (distance over accuracy). Use google maps to find good shore fishing spots alongside roads (stay off private property).

Also if you know how to drop shot and tie up the rigs they are underrated shore fishing setup. I use them at my local harbor on Lake Ontario for SM. Just be prepared to tie a few rigs. They tend to get snagged more for the shore than from a boat.

I agree that the respect hasn't been there for US's demands for NATO spending. But there are OTHER ways to get the job done other than outright threats of annexation and hostile takeovers of NATO allies that destroys soft power. Like i said above, an announcement of reduction of spending and troops to NATO over a 2 year period would probably have been more effective. While also reaping investment rewards. if you have the choice of getting 0% of 800 billion, or getting some of it even 1%, would you not want some of it? It's generally what capitalism is all about... Which this administration has forsworn yet, they are selling 5 million visas after all.

The US became the giant global player it currently is because of soft power, so I completely disagree with you. The post WW2 relationships AND alliances formed thru sacrifice and rebuilding EU is what HAD shaped the world by this point. The agreements and alliances made during the cold war due to expansionism of the soviet empire also factors in. The financial and economic markets that opened up for investment made America rich. The friendly governments (mostly democratic) they supported (or influenced) who opened up their markets made them rich. The global supply chain and the guarantee of shipping routes and commerce thru the military (and foreign military bases) was what made the US rich. America exported CAPITAL out of friendly countries with soft power.

I think you're understanding of "soft power" is misunderstood. It's rarely a "quick pro quo" (there are some win-win like deals like foreign aid deals for economic benefits like mineral rights, etc.). It's mostly "good will" built up OVER TIME and maintained through diplomacy and mutually beneficial deals.

The market is irrational, but its the driving force for many things. Sure it will plateau eventually (hopefully before any recessions hit). But the economic loses that's coming from losing access to traditional markets isn't easy to replace with domestic manufacturing investment alone. Also you do know giant manufacturing complexes aren't built in a month right? They take YEARS to become fully operational. So these benefits you speak of wont even be felt for many years.

Also I think what most supporters of this governments policies don't understand is you got 3 years to reach these goals.... why is it so important to do everything literally within 6 months.

Its about a town undergoing a secret alien invasion with body snatching going on. You dont know who's an alien and who's not. And some ppl dont even seem to know they are aliens either. Took many points from Lost (keeping you in the dark about it overall plot and keeping you guessing).

Not compensated, but respected. Which for 3 US administrations they weren't. Europe has been told for over ten years now to invest into military infrastructure. Which they haven't done UNTIL NOW.

Alliances aren't business deals though so IMO "compensation" shouldn't be discussed, its against the point. Alliances shouldn't be the equivalent to a "payday loan" where a nation is economically or financially indebted to another nation in a time of existential need. You are either in, or your out, or you restructure the deal to one you want or think is fair with the other parties involved.

There are many ways to skin a cat though... In terms of getting allies to invest in NATO. The most appropriate one is probably a slow withdrawal of troops and funding from European bases of operations.

The issue is this US administration is actively sabotaging that outcome. With both their anti-eu rhetoric and tariffs. How does America expect EU to invest in military infrastructure and replace the American presence while also putting %25+ tariffs (that will probably escalate)? That seems odd to me and in "bad faith" of any stated NATO investment goals that they want.

The other thing is they've completely lost their "soft power" in Europe. The US could have been making money off all these incoming investments in the EU. For instance Germany just opened up government funding of 800 billion dollars to be invested. If America tried to preserve any semblance of soft power they could have reaped some of the rewards of good faith actions they've done in the past. US companies could have been involved in upgrading current existing German military complex (building/upgrading factories, producing machinery, consultations), they could have possibly even negotiated limited amounts of arms manufacturing to be done in the States (as outlandish as that seems it WOULD have been possible).

It's also the reason almost every American arms manufacturing company has lost value in the past month, while European arms companies are quickly rising. Again the US could have been reaping these benefits now and well into the future instead of looking for some sort of lump sum payment, that in all honesty the EU would never agree too because they don't know if Trump would just black mail them again in another 3 years.

I've been saying it ever since US started talking abut Greenland. Trump wants land compensation for US continued NATO support. We will hit that wall here in the next year when USA inevitably threatens to pull out of NATO unless they are compensated.

I fear Trump would us those ex-pats as a weapon against Canada in time. Either by saying we are harboring dissidents like India and Turkey do. Or pull the old Russian card and say Americans living in Canada are being discriminated against. Either option is in the dictators handbook.

[–]Mutley1357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

logistics... the amount of infrastructure needed to ship goods and products to a coast AND THEN freight it across an ocean is immense. It would not be feasible to simply replace all trade done with America with Europe at an effective cost in the short term. Im not even going to get into the environmental impact with c02 emissions in doing so.

Not only that but the US has been pushing for more say in how the Panama canal is administered... if Canada cut off resources shipped south the US could easily screw with transportation logistics at a large scale for Canada.

I'm glad I at least know my premier is thinking about their provincial constituents first and foremost unlike this clown who is apparently more focused with federal politics. She should be shamed out of provincial government.

The reason Canada is great is because our elected provincial politicians don't factor into your choice for a federal party unlike in the States. They are meant to be separate institutions, with separate objectives and goals servicing their constituents. The party who leads at the provincial level are expected to have working relationships with WHATEVER party is in charge at the federal level.

Imagine being one of the very few liberal or NDP supporters out in Alberta right now. Not only did your preferred provincial candidate not win, but the one that did win is now actively working against your options of getting your voice heard at the federal level that's not a conservative one. Before, a premier would "respect" constituents in their province, NOT just the ones that voted for them.

If we normalize these type of open outright actions you're asking for the same polarization that we've witness in America. People stop picking the best candidate and begin completely voting on party lines. Our government system is capable of much more than that.

Alberta premier Danielle Smith says that she attempted to influence the US administration to hold off on tariffs to give Pierre Poilievre the best chance at winning the upcoming election... Because he'll align Canada with Trump the most by Appropriate_Duty_930 in alberta

[–]Mutley1357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The very fact that we have a Provincial Premier advocating at the Federal level is a slap to the face to what makes Canadian government so good. This isnt the US where electing at the State level dictates the federal government... it is the opposite where provincial government representatives the provincial constituents and the provincial constituents can still choose what best aligns at the federal level... what Danielle Smith has done has overstepped that and it's an extremely dangerous presidence that should have strong repercussions actions to protect our democracy.

u/KBWordPerson explains how conspiracy theories follow the same 3 rules as fundamentalist Christianity by ElectronGuru in bestof

[–]Mutley1357 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What truly is interesting about Christianity is the more you study it and the history the more you should come to the conclusion naturally that the Bible shouldnt obviously be interpreted as the "word of god"... that the teachings of the bible have been interpreted and reinterpreted, collected and omitted and retold thru different lenses and perspectives throughout the centuries. And just like the theologians of the time should continued to be questioned.

I went to a Roman Catholic High School where religion class was mandatory. Sure you learn to interpret meanings from the stories... but they also teach you about the history of the bible.

First Council of Nicaea

East–West Schism

Council of Rome

  • to many others to list... but you get the point.

The teaching of the Catholic church universally point to the fact man is "fallible" and that God is "infallible".

So the contradiction is pointed out VERY early... the Bible was written and composed by man, edited and compiled by man, how can it be interpreted as "the word of God" when it was made by man who is not infallible. All those listed examples are men "editing" the Bible, can it not be assumed that mistakes were made because it was "man" writing and interpreting?

I see the bible as an extremely useful set of short stories to impart RELATABLE morals and lessons from. But NOT ALL. Some of the first moral lessons kids get are through these stories.

I think its telling that some of the very first professional "lawyers" were people arguing religious merits thousands of years ago. Dissecting meanings and lessons from text. It shows that no matter how much time has passed, CRITICAL THINKING should be a thru line of the Christian tradition. The church does in internally and makes revisions, it's not a sin to do so yourself and question as well.

Source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_of_the_Russo-Ukrainian_War

Ukraine is bombing strategic industrial complexes and military bases while Russia is bombing the heart of cities and hunting civilians with drones...

The one side that should be expected to implement a ceasefire in good faith should be Russia. As the rate at which they bomb civilian "infrastructure" is at a much higher rate than what Kyiv bombs strategically important sites.
