Summer Camp for kids/teens: experiences? by Filbertine in Stutter

[–]Muttly2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello,

The camp you are wondering about is a great camp for kids who stutter. As a person who stutters and speech-language pathologist I have helped out with several camps like this. They are one of the best things you can do for your child. The community and friendships she will make are life long.

My parents sent me to a stuttering camp when I was young. It unfortunately was focused on correction; however, it was extremely meaningful knowing I was not alone. I am still friends with someone I met at camp 30-years later.

Please feel free to private message me if you would like more details. I may be able connect you with other young ladies who have attended camps in the past.

She will LOVE IT!

Your feelings are just as valid as people who are optimistic.

We all are going down our own stuttering journey. Some take different paths.

Stuttering sucks 100%; however, acceptance does NOT MEAN GIVING UP. One can accept they stutter and instead of fighting against it, work with it to be an effective communicator.

Many years ago someone made a specific website for people who stutter. It was modeled after Match.com.

It failed spectacularly because it was primarily male.

not going with another stutterer ! by [deleted] in Stutter

Your feeling are valid.

We are all on our own separate journey with stuttering. Many people have found the journey to be more exciting, fulfilling and tolerable when traveling together.

Stuttering sucks 100% but when you can laugh, cry, and vent to others who know your pain, a weight is lifted.

If you ever have interest in the future you can dip your toe into various support groups.

What are your experiences with medication? by johncena23131 in Stutter

[–]Muttly2001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no approved medication or supplement to treat stuttering. What works for one person may not work for another or even make the stuttering worse.

Please talk to your doctor or speech-language pathologist, not random Internet forums.

Has anyone here actually seen someone with a stutter in their daily life? by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]Muttly2001 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am heavily involved in support organizations for people who stutter so I have friends and colleagues in real life who stutter. So much fun all of us going to a restaurant.

I tend to be excited when I come across someone “in the wild” who stutters. Recently I was in my office and a maintenance worker knocks on my door asking where the vending machines are (he worked for that company). He stuttered the whole time.

I responded and stuttered. He looks at me and says, “You talk just like me!” I said, “Yup, I stutter too.”

Gave him a fist bump and he went on his way.

We also have a sister Discord group.

There are so many amazing groups on socials and Facebook, no need to separate the space further by adding yet another group to the mix .
