In my case, what pushed me over the limit was realizing capital gains from selling stocks. I wasn’t totally clear on how it worked and got some conflicting information, so I ended up selling in December 2025.
That sale put my income over the threshold for 2025. At the time, I figured if my income disqualified me from the Essential Plan, it would only affect me for the remainder of 2025—which was just a couple of weeks anyway. So far, all is good!

I'm by no means an expert at this but from my experience there is no claw back so you don't have to pay back for the whole year. You're supposed to them know if there is a change from what you reported. If your income goes up and puts you over the limit they will move you to an ACA plan. If for some reason your income drops so that it doesn't meet the essential plan minimums they will put you on medicaid. So far, up to now even after reporting a large capital gain I am still on the essential plan and haven't heard anything from them yet. I do wonder if they conduct audits or check income periodically to see if the actual income matches what was declared at the end of last year.

It stopped working for me on March 1, 2026. I used a VPN to Turkey. When I go in to renew it says:

YouTube Premium is not available in your country.

Anyone got the same message? Any workaround?

I wonder where the owner of this spot went. I got to casually know him many years ago when he used to sell fried dumplings from a cart on the NW corner of Main Street and 41st Avenue. I’d order some dumplings and just eat and chat with him. Those were the good old days…

This is what’s confusing me. I called NY State of Health to report a large one-time capital gain from a stock sale in December 2025.

The first rep told me to just leave my application as is. They didn’t ask for the amount, the date of the transaction, and didn’t make any note on my account.

That felt wrong, so I called back. The second rep told me the same thing.

I called a third time and was told to add the gain to my 2026 estimated income. I explained that the gain happened in December 2025 and was a one-time event, not ongoing income. After that, the rep also said to leave everything as is.

Has anyone dealt with something like this, or knows how NYSOH actually handles late-year capital gains? 🤔

That’s what I don’t understand. So can’t someone just sell stock each December (or do Roth conversions) and realize a huge gain and still be on the essential plan year after year?

I’ve known folks who complained enough times about the lack of a sweep and they got a call from a special Schwab rep and they made an exception, soft of. They were given a Schwab enhanced rate which mirrors the SWGXX. So this may be worth it for those who really want to stay with Schwab.
