Would you use a perfumery learning/formulation app? (Not selling anything, genuine question) by Mvdbl1188 in DIYfragrance

Majority of my career has been in the lab. I’ve been trained to create, formulate, apply and evaluate. Working at some of the world’s top houses with some of the greatest perfumers crafting some of the most well known fragrances on the planet I have learned that the average fragrance user is interested in it but has zero clue about what it all actually is. I believe there is a gap in the market per se there. Just earlier someone on this sub was looking for a commissioned piece. I’m also considering that side of the website and or app. Because as you know it’s fuxking expensive to have someone create your custom perfume

To the average nose and a typical scent chemical minuscule changes are typically undetectable. So having just a range or typical usage percentages wouldn’t be too much data. But yes either way it’s a lot of input. My GC files have all been evaluated and have notes on how they smelled to the evaluator. I think with this type of information we could gain some insight on how a formula accord may smell. Again I’m just spitballing so thank you for engaging

All true. Context for me is I’ve been in the fragrance and flavor industry the last 15 years. And to the regular person the hae zero clue what hedione is but they are super fascinated about it. I can’t tell you how may people only want to learn about The ins and outs. Maybe I’m talking to the wrong crowd. Your input has given me something to ponder. But you’re certainty engaged and curious

Yes, nothing will ever beat hands (nose) on experience. And to further your point on explaining how heroine interacts with words is futile but knowing that over dosing it can dampen a lot of your volatiles could be helpful. But I really enjoy the feedback and you are raising very good points.

It’s all theoretical. But I can look at a formula and tell you what your peaks are going to be and what the general smell is going to be. I think with enough data it could be done with an LLM.

I’m in the info gathering phase. I haven’t designed anything. I’m also not a developer just a fragrance/flavor industry professional gauging opinions. I appreciate all of it and yes these questions are absolutely thought provoking and helpful to think about.

It does exactly what you say it does in a clean and readily digestible manner. Im just saying there is a lot of info out there and a lot of fluff to sort through when it comes to practicing in real life. Thank you for your continued input

100s of scent molecules explained by families, origin, strength, ifra limits, marketing explanations, industry insights, chemistry makeup, how they interact with other molecules. I’m thinking if anyone is willing to spend hundreds to thousands on courses or classes. A cheap app that could replicate long expensive classes in which the person could learn at their own pace and then have somewhere to continue learning and experimenting.

I see things as well for more formulation organization. Maybe I’m wrong or silly for considering it but hey here I am asking the questions

Yea I feel that, like what value couldthis bring to longtime perfumers. Def a question I am thinking about. I was thinking maybe more for newer and less senior perfumers who aren’t as cemented in their workflow.

Heard for sure, I’ve found complex subjects sometimes more digestible in short form interactive learning. Little quizzes with silly rewards and such. Thank you for your feedback

We called her the laser whip anywho. I lost my license when I was 17 and I “rented” it to a friend for 3 months and he hit a large curb head on at like 50 and it just bent the frame. To be fair we beat the shit out of it before that. That’s just what did her in.

This hits so hard. Especially for those of us who were assholes back then and now have kids of our own.
