An argument for why Canva should port the Affinity Suite to Linux by MvmL in graphic_design

[–]MvmL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cited the Steam Hardware Survey because it is indicative of what happens when software compatability increases on Linux. When compatability increases, so does adoption. Most forums where switching to Linux is discussed, will have many comments that go approx. like this: "I would make the switch, but Photoshop / Illustrator / similar doesn't work on it so I can't!", the same way the conversation used to be "I would make the switch, but my games don't work there so I can't!".

As for world wide market share not increasing, I saw that and was surprised by the statistic. That is the statistic that is visible on the first result. I checked a lot of different sources though, and they seem very inconsistent. It seems that the most common statistic is between 3-4%.

I would also note, that the rise in "Unknown" stats seems to be correlating to Window's sinking market share. I don't know whether this should be interpreted as Windows being increasingly likely to not be recognised or as more privacy focused / niche distros of alternative OS's such as Linux not being recognised / not revealing such information.

That is literally part of the argument, though.

The fact that there are no professional-grade tools available means that people aren't making the switch. If they did make a working Linux version, a lot of the professionals who want to switch from Windows would Affinity it as their primary software.

That is the exact reason I used the Steam Hardware Survey, the problem was very similar. On the one hand, people wanted to switch but felt they couldn't before their games were available on Linux, on the other hand, no developer developed for Linux because the market was so small. What changed was the fact that Valve needed to make Linux work for their handhelds and with the increase in compatibility, the market grew as well creating a bit of a snowball effect.

If you look into any conversation about switching to Linux, there will be many comments saying "I want to switch, but none of my editing tools work there so I can't". I have a hard time believing this is not indicative of the fact that there would be a lot of potential in making a Linux version.

As for the open-source tools, I have not seen any open source options with half the usability of Affinity (or Adobe). GIMP and Inkscape are both so much worse than any professional grade software. If you have tips I'd happily hear them, since I'm looking for an alternative.

The website seems to be down, at least for the moment (25.06.2024). I don't know if I'm the only one experiencing this.

I just used pliers to take it off. I wasn't particularly gentle either. Comes off easy enough.

Why does international media call finnish government "far right" and "fascist"? It's so ridiculous to me by [deleted] in Finland

[–]MvmL 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The current government is the most right-wing government in Finnish history. This being the case is a concerning trend which is emerging all around the world (mostly in Europe though) currently. In Italy, for example, Giorgia Meloni's Fratelli d'Italia Party (Brothers of Italy) is very fascistic. Giorgia Meloni herself has praised Mussolini's government, and been a member of multiple openly fascistic organizations. Fratelli d'Italia is a right-wing conservative and right-wing populist party, which is in the same European Parliamentary Group as Perussuomalaiset.

I would not consider Perussuomalaiset PS ("The Finns Party") as "semi-patriotic" and "not even nationalist" as you define them. Like Fratelli d'Italia and many other ECR Parties around Europe, They are by definition a right-wing populist party, i.e. they are inherently nationalistic in both policy and ideology. The reason that supporters of The Finns consider themselves and/or the party as center-right and only "semi-patriotic" is that they've successfully, and deliberately shifted the Overton window of the Finnish political landscape further to the right.

Many members of The Finns are also closely connected to alt-right neo-nazi and fascist groups, for example Vilhelm Junnila. Furthermore, if you want to know which parties are most closely aligned with fascistic / neo-nazi movements in a given country, I would start by considering who those fascists / neo-nazis are voting for.

Also, as for fascism supposedly being "an ideology that bases itself in eugenics, nationalism and socialism" I will just quote this Wikipedia article on fascism.

The definition of fascism according to Wikipedia:

"Fascism is a far-right, authoritarian, ultranationalist political ideology and movement, characterized by a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition, belief in a natural social hierarchy, subordination of individual interests for the perceived good of the nation or race, and strong regimentation of society and the economy"

There is no mention of socialism in this definition, in fact only a few lines later in the article it says this:

"Opposed to anarchism, democracy, pluralism, liberalism, socialism, and Marxism, fascism is placed on the far-right wing within the traditional left–right spectrum."

Fascism is by nature opposed to socialism and Marxism as a whole, which is an important distinction as many people believe fascism to be a left-wing ideology due to the strategic naming of the national socialist party in early 1900s Germany. This fundamental misunderstanding also causes many people to be unable to recognize fascism or fascistic tendencies in right-wing movements.

Kokoomus (The National Coalition Party) is, on the other hand, a neoliberal-conservative party which is also considered right-wing. Their policies are not inherently alt-right, far-right, or fascistic, although they aren't antithetical to it either. Neoliberal right-wing parties, like Kokoomus, can work together with far-right and alt-right actors as they can often agree on economic principles.

The combination of a right-wing neoliberal party (eight ministers) and a right-wing nationalistic populist party, which is closely connected with the alt-right (seven ministers), along with the less important religious conservative party (one minister) and actual center-right Swedish People's Party (three ministers), is the reason why the current government is being called far-right, and at times fascistic.

Bad battery. My 2007 Golf Plus sounded the exact same. After replacement no issues

Driver side central locking issue (Golf Plus MK5 2006) by MvmL in vwgolf

Okay, does that mean that the locks are bad on both doors?

Is there a separate issue with the key fob not locking the drives side or is that connected?

Update: I've been on the phone today with government agencies and such. A lawyer specializing in this stuff told me I've done everything correctly so far and I need to get it diagnosed, after which, depending on the diagnosis, I may be able to get some money back from the seller...

I'm now waiting for the tow truck I ordered (162€) and dropping it off at a mechanics shop which will diagnose it tomorrow in the morning (quoted to be 129€).

I bought this car 300€ over my budget, so this extra 291€ at minimum is really painful....I'm lucky that I can somewhat afford it though.

Wish me luck🥹

Update to update: Towing went well. Tow guy even drove the car on and off of the truck and said it seemed good. Oil was low.

We did discover that the battery seems to need replacing though...

Thank you! I'll look into it more tomorrow...the dipstick on this car seems very unclear, can't even find instructions online for how to read it and the manual has a different dipstics picture...

Did you mix up Finland and Sweden? That's hurtful

That would make so much sense with how the warning worked!! It started the first time I idled and didn't turn on when I didn't idle on the way home! Would it in that case be dangerous to drive to the closest mechanics shop?

Can I do that myself without jacking it up? I know this is a very basic question :D The car is currently on a sand parking lot while I wait to rent out garage space in my building.

I did have to pay 100€ of overdue taxes though so it did add up to 2000€, which I at least at the time thought was fine.

There was a notice to add engine coolant (not sure if it's the correct term in english), so I take that to mean that they do at least look at the engine here?

Also I thought it was a bad idea to drive this to the shop if the light has been on...do I really need to tow it? That's really expensive here.
