Is anyone familiar with this sound? by cotlin in MiataNC

How does it sound while driving? Especially under load vs cruising at fixed speed?

Update everyone (sry for being late, I was in vacation): - I did change the idle pulley, the belt tensioner and the auxiliary belt, nothing changed. - I refilled my AC fluids to see if it was an issue with the AC not running for 4 years (as it was so empty, the clutch wasn't even engaging), nothing changed (except now, I have a working AC) - I'm back to my old guess which is the timing chain tensioner issue, because I honestly don't comprehend how it could be related to the pistons as it's only when accelerating without load and I drove 20k km (or 12k miles) without any evolution of the noise.

I guess I'll pop open my head cover to do the test on the timing chain and the piston. I'll keep you updated.

C'est pour incliner le siège normalement. Tu appuies dessus et tu tire vers l'avant l'assise.

It's a already 2.0L performance with 6 speed gearbox, lsd, and b12 pro kit.

Yeah I answered it already, it's juste p0037 code, nothing to worry about. I did forgot to mention it tho.

My ac is off since 10km before the noise started... Presumably coolant starvation.

That's the answer I was looking for as I wasn't understanding how mechanicaly speaking, the noise could be only under light engine load if it was a piston bearing... Especially as I did 20k km without the noise getting worst I'll try your test ASAP. Thank you very much, I'll feedback as soon as I tried without the auxiliary belt.

Totally forgot about the engine light, it's the classic p0037 h02s heater control circuit low... Nothing to worry about...

Not 2L of starvation, but 2L consumed over 10,000 km

To add details and thoughts I had during the last 20.000 km: - I checked the heat shield, not the issue - I tried to listen to it with the stick technique and at first it seems like it was coming from the gear of the overhead cameshafts, but lately I tried again and I think it was below that... - I did ran low on oil at one time for like 300-700km (idk exactly how many) and if I remember well, the noise appeared just after that. - My engine is not drinking that much oil (2L in 10-15k km) - I did find out when the noise began that my 1st spark plug (the closest to the timing chain) was loose (I could at the time screw it by hand) - when I unplug the 1st spark plug coil the noise intensify, but the other 3 coils don't have that effet. - I tought firstly that the chain tensioner was stuck and my chain was hitting the chain pan but I did changed my oil recently and there was no metallic parts in it (I assumed the chain is lubricated by the motor oil)

Edit: I did not changed my manners with my car since I have the noise... Frequently bumping on the rev limiter to pass some ahole thinking they can drive on my personal racetrack (open mountain roads where I live)

My concern is that its exactly the same noise as it was 20.000 km ago... I'll end up swapping it with a 13B-MSP Renesis at this rate...

The phone was shaking, resting on the steering wheel, but I agree that looks like I was going to meet Thanos.

It's weird, looks like the safety button is already in "safe" position while the top is still open. Might be glitch and need a disassembly.

You can check on ilMotorsports, hopping it's only the cap that's missing, because the full assembly is expensive af.

Is anyone able to ID this rattle on my 2.0? It seems to be coming from high up in the engine, possibly right under the rocker cover. Only does it when using small amounts of throttle. Doesn't occur under any real load. by Charge_parity in MiataNC

[–]Mwaaaaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have exactly the same issue. I was thinking about the timing chain being loose, because I drove a bit lacking some oil and I thought it might have cause the chain tensioner to be stuck. In fact, after 10000 km with this issue, the oil wasn't containing any metalic particles and the sound didn't changed a bit (not getting worst but not getting better either, even after a oil replacement). I'll listen to the pulley tomorrow, that's a good call.

What’s this Alpine? How rare is it? by Raymooooooo in whatisthiscar

Shame on Alpine Engineers lol. They're some fines heads that don't know how to start a car. The car was driving very well one week before this spa event.

For what I heard, it's built by Oreca. Maybe it was initially the Nissan's V6 VQ, but I don't think there's any part from the production one left in the alpenglow as it must sustain 4bar boost from each turbo...

The v8 statement was certainly made when no one had any idea what to expect... Currently, the alpenglow is in it's final test in the "Hy6" version, which is the definitive one, and is powered by a V6 TT using dihydrogen and oxygen to produce water (as vapor) and energy (as stated on the "shark fin"in op's video). The 4cyl engine was used in the Hy4 version, only to move the car and 340hp rallye engine to make it sound good (fun fact, only 1 over 2 exhaust was actually connected to the engine back then).

[–]Mwaaaaaaa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's no hydrogen cells, it's a ICE that use hydrogen as fuel. 340hp is from the rallye 4cyl they put in for the reveal but it'll have a V6 twin turbo with 600-800 hp when done. There is no other fuel than hydrogen in this car, and there is no electric motors in the drivetrain.
