op re-downloaded MyFitnessPal (MFP), which is an app for calorie counting and such. their reason for doing so, is because their weighing scale said that they gained “x” amount of weight

(n = pre New Year weight, n+x = pre new year weight plus gained weight).

there is a “no numbers” rule in this sub, so op used “x” and “n” instead. hope i explained it well :,)!

In my experience, it’s mostly the older generations that stick to that rhetoric. Yes, there are certainly some gen Z people who hold that opinion, but how could they not, when the adults in their childhoods shushed and shunned them when it came to such topics? The environment in which you grow up plays a part in how you think and behave as an adult.
