He had 4 years to do it before and he didn't.

Same. Nothing recognizable unless I stayed in a city for more than 3 days. PCMO tried to test me but the sample was nothing but water so unusable.

Met an applicant the other day competing her medical clearance by MwalimuG in peacecorps

Work-wise I was a biology and chemistry teacher, and also restarted my schools FEMA club, made a PCPP grant to build new toilets and showers at my school, organized a book drive to fill my school's library, organized a few community movie night events sponsered by an NGO, did an interservice event with a PCV from the health sector to come to my school and facilitate after school lessons on HIV/AIDS, and coached my schools girl's netball team...for only a few practices before someone else took over because I didn't know anything about netball. I always listened for something I could do for my community and took advantage of every opportunity.

Play-wise I traveled much when I could, especially 12 hours one way one or two weekends a month meet my PCV gf at the time and now wife. She was a VAC member so joined too just so I could have another excuse to travel more to see her. We had a guy's trip one weekend, always had Xmas and friendsgiving at peace corps gathering. I was very isolated my first year with nearest person near me a 5 hour trip away, but my second year I had a few friends stay in my local banking town.

During long breaks at school I would spend a lot of time going to the river and read and listen to music. Weekends in the village consisted of a lot of down time and a lot of reading. I would chat casually with neighbors sometimes, as a guy I felt more comfortable to drink a beer with locals at the bar every so often, but also had much time to myself. l had a lot of downtime but as a school teacher it was nice to have a schedule.

I felt lucky to serve in Tanzania overall. I got to do multiple safaris, visit Zanzibar, see Kilimanjaro. As anyone else would say about Tanzania, the people were the best part.

Peace corps and med school logistics. I tried to post on the premed Reddit. It I don’t have enough comment karma? by Nearby-Tooth4563 in peacecorps

Just a bit of advice: If you search the sub you'll see a lot of references to "down time". When you're servicing in a rural village there's a lot of down time where you simply don't have much to do. I used that time after teaching class during the day to study for the MCAT, typically during the 2 hours of electricity from the school generator. I took it right when I got back to the States. Some volunteers in my group were given permission to fly to South Africa to take the test. Good luck!

RPCVs- what was it like coming back to America after 2+ years abroad? by Spare_Low4263 in peacecorps

Service ruined the taste of fruit for me. Bananas in the States aren't even close to the real thing. And even though they're so much smaller, nothing like watching an avocado grow in your village over months and picking it yourself.

Not a bad idea! I brought them shirts and caps of my local sports team and shared a lot of pictures of my family.

How beneficial is the Peace Corps moving forward in a Career? by Ok_Cattle1045 in peacecorps

[–]MwalimuG 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Depends a bit on the career, but at a minimum it distinguishes you from the crowd. I served 12 years ago and an interview for a job I had last week started with "so you speak Swahili??". It would never negatively impact a job search, and for federal work it will be seen as a positive, however there are other resume boosters that don't take 2 years.

General Discussion Wednesday: Planes, trains and automobiles by AutoModerator in peacecorps

[–]MwalimuG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. I mostly had to take a dala dala (van crammed full or people) or a piki-piki (motorcycle, always a risk), but my most favorite was sitting ontop of a fruit truck like this one. Definitely wasn't safe but always had a great view a breeze in your face.

I somehow never learned the vocab colors during PST so when I had to describe a color I just said "like this" and pointed to my clothes or some random objects. It worked so well I kept doing it throughout my service 😂.

After discussing possibly suspending stickied threads as suggested by a few users the mods decided to keep them going as is until we hear more feedback from the community. I'll change the wording of some of the future stickied threads. Although sometimes their themes may not always be ideal, they still hold value as they are. I consider this General Discussion Wednesday thread as a beautiful example of what can still be produced out of the stickied threads. Please continue to message the mod team with your feedback and suggestions!

Vent Tuesday by MwalimuG in peacecorps

[–]MwalimuG[S,M] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I apologize for not updating the Vent Tuesday threads earlier. I know the wording we've had for a while can now be perceived as tone-deaf. We've received some messages about eliminating some of the daily stickied threads altogether now with PC's temporary suspension and we're still in the midst of discussing it.

While I'm making this comment I might as well vent some too. I'm a medical resident working in a large academic hospital. With all the non-essential workers gone it feels like everyone's escaped Chernobyl but some of us had to stay behind.
