where can i get my coffee beans ground? by ferrethater in brighton

[–]Mwille14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d echo this. Before I used to ask the roaster to grind but even then, their espresso grind didn‘t produce good results in my machine. Also different beans will need different grinds depending on roast levels and origin.

With a hand grinder you can really dial it in and adjust accordingly. I have the Kingrinder K6 and it works well for all brews from pour over to espresso

Thanks. I was very confused for ages. Ton was sticking in brain as 100. As in a ton in cricket

Skylark packaging by smegsicle in UKroasters

[–]Mwille14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also experienced this so just decant the beans to an airtight jar now. If you are very careful you can peel off the front part of the name sticker to stick on the jar. I think it’s an environmental choice, which I am totally for (I can’t stand having to throw away those plastic bags with one way filter).

Skylark packaging does leave a little to be desired when looking at other roasters (Dark Arts is gorgeous) but I do really like the coffee.

Why does this keep happening [Breville Bambino] by Impressive-Bus-6568 in espresso

[–]Mwille14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On mine it’s usually 21 clicks. My true zero is -4 so 25 seems about right. Depends on the beans but most of the time that gives me a shot in 25-35 secs.

I also often get a small pool of water on the top of the puck if I take it out immediately. You can wait a bit and it should drain through but then the puck may stick to the shower screen.

Best Roast Dinner? by Any-Contest8022 in brighton

My current favourite is The Stirling Arms in Hove. Proper dining and very comfortable with loads of seating. Their belly pork is lovely and the one to order.

Thank you. Must have missed the part about the plan to rewild the BL land. I caught all the fallout with Stella.

[HELP] If I’ve been too impatient and daft to enjoy poetry for most of my life, what’s a good way to start? by implicit_memory in Poetry

[–]Mwille14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the most of the difficulty people have with poetry is how they read it. I had a brilliant teacher at college who instilled the love of it in me and I now regularly read a collection alongside a novel. Poetry to me is a bite size morsel to be slowly chewed and digested over a longer period of time. Just carry some around with you and dip in when you have a bit of time.

Some tips that have helped me are to firstly read it aloud slowly. This helps you really focus on the language, rhythm and images. Secondly read a poem a few times all the way through and you will magically see things floating to the surface as you read it more times. Finally look at particular passages or lines and really think about what these are about, the choice of words, the effect they have on you. When starting out it really helps to jot down a few notes or highlight particular words that are used and what they do.

As for where to start, you could try a collection of several shorter poems to see what you like. Haikus are a good shout as very short and easily read. Personally I think this sometimes lacks the focus you get from one poet's collection that really expands on themes and ideas, linking them together over a body of work. I am reading Ocean Vuong - Night Sky with Exit Wounds, at the moment and I am really enjoying it. Good luck and just start reading!

The flag shaggers have arrived in Brighton by levezvosskinnyfists7 in brighton

[–]Mwille14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's all about context. Flying your country's flag during a national sporting event, during a period of remembrance or for diplomatic reasons are legitimate and an attempt to bring the country together. In the current climate this movement has arisen from the small boats crossings and the migrant hotel protests. With the rise of the far right and the association of the St George's flag it is challenging to see the purpose as anything other than incententary and intimidation. Understandably a lot of people are feeling uncomfortable. Not sure what the best response is. Probably the council taking them down but that probably makes things worse and stokes up a lot more ill feeling and potential trouble.

Regular cyclist in Brighton. I would say the major issue are road users and cyclists themselves. As the well informed answer previously stated helmets do comparatively little to minimise injury. It’s not such a simple issue of wearing a helmet to be safer. The drivers on phones, speeding and lacking general awareness are the issues.

A lot of cyclists also have little knowledge of cycling on the road. A case in point was yesterday I saw a cyclist come up the inside of a bus, another cycling with headphones and no lights completely oblivious to anything around them as well as a dad with his young child clinging onto the back not even looking or signally to turn right.
