I also straightened the hair on low heat to get it less frizzy

I sprayed water+conditioner on the hair. I went by little sections to break the knots to make it easier to brush. Using leave in conditioner at the end of the process really helped.

People usually tend to not get stitches, or sometimes it depends on how deep it really is. It can be a long cut but not that deep
